This is a Multi Entry O/A Visa. Do I have to get permission from Immigration to leave and visit my best friend in Jakarta or just go to the airport, leave, and return when the visit is over.

A Re-Entry Permit is not needed the first year of an O-A Multi-Entry visa; however, they are indeed needed for subsequent years unless one gets a new O-A Multi-Entry visa every year.

I think with Multi O/A Visa you don't need one, because you have to leave Thailand every 90 days anayway.

O-A Multi-Entry visa holders are not required to leave the country every 90 days. They are, however, required to report their address every 90 days if staying in-country. It's painless to do, and can be done by mail after the initial report.

Depends upon if you got the visa in LoS or abroad (near as I can figure, anyway).

If gotten in LoS, then you are correct, and you have to simply report your addy and you'll be given a one year stamp upon (each) entry.

If gotten abroad, you have to leave as you only get a 90 day stamp.

In fact, that doesn't really sound right. I'd bet that the driving factor for reporting is the multi-entry one year vs the single entry one-year. If you get a one year entry stamp, then you have to report. If you get a 90 day entry stamp, then you do not.

Cheers,

SD -- has always had multis gotten from abroad, so always has had to leave after 90 days...

The multi entry one year O-A visa gets you a 365 day permission to stay stamp on entry during the validity of the visa (one year).

So each time he leaves and enters he gets 365 days. A few days before the one year validity (use by date on the visa) is up, he leaves and gets a permission to stay stamp good for 365 days.

At that point, since the visa is no longer valid, he will need to get a re-entry permit to keep the permission to stay stamp alive.

This means that a multi entry one year O-A visa gets you almost 2 year stay.

At the end of the final permission to stay stamp, he goes to immigration with 800k in the bank (or 65k income letter from embassy) and he gets a one year extension on the permission to stay stamp.

He will need a re-entry permit to leave and return and keep that extension valid.

At all times, if he stays in kingdom for 90 consecutive days, he needs to report address to immigration. If he leaves within 90 days, his new entry starts the clock on the 90 day address report.
