or to be more specific

Enjoy

Loads of information on that site

I recommend taking the night train up--Thai sleeper trains are great, and hey, you're saving a night of hotel!--and taking the day train back, just so you can experience the view (going down the mountains, etc.) and grab some of the excellent vendor food that comes by the windows at stops (northern Thai "sai ua" sausage, yeah!)

Sir ,

using trains in Thailand is the second best thing on earth after boom-boom plus you could in fact combine both aspects in a most civilised manner by using the night sleeper .

  • 3 weeks later...

it's only a 'little less' than a flight

I've done it 3 times.

I last 2 times I've trained north & flown south

get the 1st class sleeper with sink, 2 bunks & sink / pisser .. not the 2nd class sleeper bunk

(not sure the actual ticket designations but there are 2 different sleeper tickets, room vs bunk, look it up)

but the memories are worth so much:

*the 'squat crapper' on a rocking train is memorable

*I find sleeping on the train to be particularly excellent .. click clack click clack click clack whilst rocking hammock like

*the food on the train is excellent

*the 'pissing sink' in the 1st class sleeper room is worth a lot.

*the 'bunks' are smallish for 2 .. place an immediate non-negociable claim on the bottom bunk

*the train enters the Himalaya foot hills about dawn

*plenty of early morning people watching out the 'picture window' ..

*leaqve Bkk early evening arrive CM early morning (9-ish)

pack some take out .. Hua Laphong has many many (expensive) take out options

then tuk tuk to the Lanna Thai hotel
