I worked in a factory once when they were just starting to change over to the automated machines.

From what I remembered the problem was not the unions but finding and training somebody to baby sit the machines. Excepting new technologies is something I would say is not something the average persons looks forward to do.

Remember when companies had key punch employees? Secretaries?

In N.H., Giuliani Comes Out Swinging

Rudy Giuliani returned to the Granite State Friday night, acknowledging his poor performance here in the 2008 GOP primary in a speech that lambasted President Obama, jabbed Mitt Romney’s health plan and praised the tea party.

[color:red]The former New York City mayor gave little hint of his own plans, but seemed relaxed during a showy speech at the Manchester GOP Lincoln Reagan Dinner that was laced with jokes and hand gestures as he skewered Obama as a “failure†and ended with the declaration, “Hillary Clinton would have been better.â€

It was his first trip to New Hampshire of the 2012 cycle, and the first since he made clear he’s contemplating another run for president — one that could offer redemption for his dismal fourth-place finish in the first-in-the-nation primary last time.

Giuliani lauded the tea party movement extensively, saying it is about preserving the “freedoms†of the country.

[color:red]“My view of the tea party is the tea party is one of the best things that’s happened to American democracy in a very, very long time,†he said. “People in the tea party, like me, believe that our freedom is being taken away.â€

He mocked Obama’s background as a community organizer, saying it is the wrong kind of experience for a president, adding, “It’s worse than we thought, isn’t it? He really seems like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.“

He accused the president of “dithering†over Libya, and called him “incapable of making a decision.â€

“This president has been a failure in just about every single thing that he’s done,†he said.

“The president of the United States gave [the anti-Qadhafi forces] encouragement ... [and people] got killed and slaughtered by Qadhafi while Obama dithered,†he thundered. “That’s a president? That’s what we want in this country? Can we stand two more years of this? Well, we’re going to have to.â€

I've been a writer and an editor. As such I remember when the unions fought tooth and nail against computers in the press, insisting things had to be done the old way - using lead type. The Bangkok Post in non-union Thailand actually was way ahead of the US and UK press in technology for some years.

Both of my grandfathers belonged to unions (railway), and my grandmother's brother was a union representitive (sheet metal workers). They did well, thanks to the unions. My father started with the railway union - and got screwed over by it when he decided to use the post-WWII GI bill to get a university education. (He wanted to keep working part time, but the union said no - and also pulled his seniority. All the money he had paid into his retirement with them was lost. It was about $6,000 - which in contemporary currency would be at least $75,000.)

I remember when I was a machinist, the company found out that my 'perfect' work wasn't that perfect. I guess somebody saw me make holes that were too big - small so they would meet spec.

Because of that incident, I would have lost my job if it wasn't for the Union. The Union stood by me but that was the only time they did help me out.

Back then, unions were strong because of all the money they were bringing in from dues.

I agree. But you said the 47% don't pay federal income taxes because they are below the poverty level. And that ain't correct.

P.S. Would somebody here please instruct Unit731 on how to "google"?

Facts sometimes get in the way of the truth.

"The 47 percent number is not wrong."

"So why are those radio and television talk show hosts spending so much time arguing that today’s wealthy are unfairly burdened? Well, it’s hard not to notice that the talk show hosts themselves tend to be among the very wealthy."

"No doubt, like the rest of us, they don’t particularly enjoy paying taxes. They are happy with the tax cuts they have received lately. They would prefer if other people had to pick up the bill for Medicare, Social Security and the military — people like, say, firefighters, preschool teachers, computer support specialists, farmers, members of the clergy, mail carriers, secretaries and truck drivers."

Google yourself and read up. And stop listening to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Alex Jones, and the rest of the fruit cakes out there.

Every one of these pundits is a card carrying member of a UNION !

Below is a good example of the nut cases out there. And if you believe this garbage - well, maybe it's time to look into the mirror and see if you are in fact looking at a fruit cake.

Did you ever stop to think that TV/Movie people are REQUIRED to be union members? The union mafia has been successful in mandating such a law/rule. But there are plenty of crack pot celebrities making the same money who think it's wonderful to pay more and more taxes. I hope they do so. They can also donate more of their easy money to the Treasury. Nothing is stopping them from giving all of their wages/residuals to Uncle Sam.

Woman, 92, Goes Ballistic After Being Denied Kiss :susel:

MARCH 22--After being denied a kiss yesterday by a neighbor 39 years her junior, a 92-year-old Florida woman allegedly returned to her home, retrieved a .380 semi-automatic handgun, and fired several shots into the man’s residence.

Aged pistolero Helen Staudinger was arrested last night and charged with aggravated assault and firing into an occupied dwelling, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report.

Investigators allege that Staudinger went next door to speak with Dwight Bettner, but her 53-year-old neighbor asked her to leave. In an interview with a sheriff’s deputy, Staudinger said she told Bettner that she would not leave unless he gave her a kiss.

Bettner declined, which triggered an argument between the Fort McCoy residents.

That is when an incensed Staudinger returned to her home, got her pistol, and allegedly fired into Bettner’s residence. Bettner, who was hit by flying debris, was not seriously injured by the gunfire.

Staudinger told a cop that she had planned to “shoot his car that he loved so much.†Investigators believe that she instead “fired diagonally through the victim’s carport hitting the house with all four rounds fired.â€

Bettner told police that he has had “on-going issues with Ms. Staudinger and feels that she is enamored with him.†He added that he had previously told his neighbor that he had a girlfriend, “at which time Ms. Staudinger allegedly threatened to shoot him.â€

A sheriff’s deputy reported that she recovered Staudinger’s weapon -- with a round in the chamber -- from an end table in the nonagenarian’s living room.

Staudinger, facing a pair of felonies, is being held in the county lockup in lieu of $15,000 bond.

Kiss me, my sweet baboo!
