Lawmakers with a net worth below $1 million are now a minority in Congress, an analysis of congressional financial disclosure data finds.

A new study conducted by the Center for Responsive Politics discovered that for the first time, more than half those in the House and Senate are millionaires. The study examined disclosures filed last year, the most recent available, and found that 268 have an average net worth above the threshold. Lawmakers are required to make ranges of their financial assets public each year...

Major Parts of the World Ignored by US TV News in 2013

Washington - If people outside the United States are looking for answers why Americans often seem so clueless about the world outside their borders, they could start with what the three major U.S. television networks offered their viewers in the way of news during 2013.

Syria and celebrities dominated foreign coverage by ABC, NBC, and CBS – whose combined evening news broadcasts are the single most important media source of information about national and international events for most Americans. Vast portions of the globe went almost entirely ignored, according to the latest annual review by the authoritative Tyndall Report.

Latin America, most of Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia apart from Afghanistan, and virtually all of East Asia – despite growing tensions between China and Washington’s closest regional ally, Japan – were virtually absent from weeknight news programmes of ABC, NBC, and CBS last year, according to the report, which has tracked the three networks’ evening news coverage continuously since 1988.

I just read 2 articles. The first said considerably less than half of Americans watched the evening news and couldn't recognize a picture go Brian Williams, the anchor for NBC, the highest rated of the 3 newscasts. This explains why most of the commercials on the newscasts are aimed at retired persons, like commercials for prescription drugs. The second article claimed that ABC news was becoming the People magazine of the airways, covering far less hard news than the other two newscasts. Personally, I rarely get home by 5:30 to watch any of them.

The younger generation - those that actually seek news - view:

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

and

The Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert

And whatever gossip is presented at the local tavern.

That’s what this proposed South Carolina bill (S.B. 878) (sponsored by Sen. Sheheen, and now before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary) would provide:

(A) It is [a felony punishable by up to five years in prison] for a person to produce or create, or conspire to produce or create, a video or audio recording, digital electronic file, or other visual depiction or representation of a violent crime, as defined in Section 16-1-60, during its commission … [except for]

(1) viewing, photographing, videotaping, or filming by personnel of the Department of Corrections or of a county, municipal, or local jail or detention center or correctional facility for security purposes or during investigation of alleged misconduct by a person in the custody of the Department of Corrections or a county, municipal, or local jail or detention center or correctional facility;

(2) security surveillance in bona fide business establishments;

(3) accidental or incidental recordings;

(4) any official law enforcement activities;

(5) private detectives and investigators conducting surveillance in the ordinary course of business; or

(6) any bona fide news gathering activities.

Because Oral Sex Is Just So Much Worse for Teenagers Than Genital Sex

By Eugene Volokh on January 9, 2014 1:39 pm in Sexual Conduct Restrictions

Delegate Thomas Garrett has proposed a bill that would make it a felony in Virginia for anyone to have oral or anal sex with a minor. But genital sex? Well, Virginia law would, even if this bill is enacted, provide that genital sex between an adult and a 15-to-17-year-old is a misdemeanor, and sex among 15-to-17-year-olds is perfectly legal. So if two 17-year-olds are choosing whether to have oral sex or genital sex, the law would push them towards the form of sex that is more likely to transmit disease, and more likely to cause unwanted pregnancy. Genius.
