Bangkoktraveler
A great watch! I got caught in a monsoon years ago on a mountain. I wish I had a camera. I was standing in 1/2 foot of water and lightening was forming only a couple hundred yards from me.
gobbledonk
A large chunk of QLD is currently under water, including some very expensive homes in the 3rd largest city in Oz. I guess people in tropical Asia/India etc live with the threat of inundation every monsoon season, but this scares the shit out of many Australians. If you look closely at this image, you can see a town in the middle of all that dirty floodwater. A town of 70,000 people: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/48000/48524/rockhampton_ali_2011009_lrg.jpg I left Rocky almost 3 1/2 years ago, and they have had two big floods in that short timeframe - the future just doesnt look promising IMO. Flashermac
I remember floods in central California, with people even paddling canoes through Santa Barbara. But they just lasted a few days. This Oz flood almost seems here to stay! I've got some distant cousins in QL. Hope they're doing okay. I'd better email and ask. gobbledonk
Brisbane going under the brown tide, right now: http://twitpic.com/3p8f15/full Plenty of YouTube vids, including this perspective of the current right next to the CBD: Peak isnt expected until Thursday, and most of the people in that vid would be under water if they elect to keep filming. Personally, I'd be moving to Spring Hill pronto. When its over, the fun really starts. Anyone enjoy a spot of roadwork ? http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=280275&id=339665603253&fbid=10150089112978254
Nervous God
I remember not going to school for a week in the 74 floods, in Brisvegas, this is worse, Great time to buy a house in a few months time though
gobbledonk
A more comprehensive set of current photos, reportedly being updated as the drama unfolds: http://floods.acianetmedia.com/ A lot of the shots really only make sense when you know just how high those bridges normally sit about that big, brown river. Its not the Mekong, but right now it looks a lot more forbidding than normal.
ozpharlap
Hi Gobbles, I am right on the scene, sitting on my balcony (I am in those high rises opposite the Storey Bridge, CBD side), with a cool chardy. A got the car out of harm's way, just in time, all of our basements have been flooded. Not sure if you know Brisbane well, but the Venice cafe down stairs is inundated, and the Drift cafe has been washed away. The army has been called in to torpedo the Island, that big barge that plays that noisy rock'n'roll music, loiters up and down the river and has hundreds of peeping toms on-board looking into our balconies (if they did it anywhere else they would be arrested). If they need a hand I will give them the ammunition Looks like I will be stuck in the building for a week, ah well, there is always Thai360 to while away the hours and alcohol
gobbledonk
In other news, tonights cliffhanger Asian Cup match between Oz and Korea appears to be in doubt: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs736.ash1/162934_175726382463653_129031607133131_356833_6817711_n.jpg
