Botched Nato bomb raid on Brega leaves 13 Libyan rebels dead after jets blast wrong convoy

Libyan rebels turned their fury on Nato yesterday after at least 13 fighters were killed and dozens wounded in an airstrike.

Rebel commanders said tanks and military hardware captured from Colonel Gaddafi’s forces had been attacked in daylight with missiles despite being marked on the top in yellow as requested by Nato.

Four missiles hit the 30-vehicle convoy, which included a bus packed with fighters, on the outskirts of the eastern oil port of Brega, according to one rebel commander.

Nato said last night it was investigating the claims that, if confirmed, would be the third time rebels or civilians have been killed after being mistaken for pro-Gaddafi forces.

The claims came as it was revealed another one-time senior Gaddafi official had defected.

Following foreign minister Musa Kusa’s arrival in the UK last week, Omar Fathi bin Shatwan, a former energy minister, sought sanctuary in Malta. He said several other key figures also wanted to defect.

It was unclear last night whose planes were involved in the mistaken strikes but both the RAF and the French have been carrying out attacks in the region.

The rebels have been using anti-aircraft guns as artillery and there was a suggestion that the airstrike was triggered when one opened fire on government forces in Brega.

An ambulance was one of the vehicles hit and three volunteer medical students were among the dead. Doctors said many rebels suffered terrible burns in the attack.

One rebel fighter shouted ‘down, down with Nato’ as dozens of vehicles retreated eastwards at speed from the frontlines back towards the city of Ajdabiya.

Later, hundreds of cars poured out of Ajdabiya towards the de facto rebel capital, Benghazi, amid fears that better organised pro-Gaddafi forces could use the disarray among rebel units to advance.

[color:red]At the city’s hospital, rebels said they heard planes and expected the attack to be on the forward lines of Gaddafi’s forces.

‘They are equipped with all that technology, which we haven’t got,’ said Yassim Muttar, who had come in with a badly injured friend.

[color:red]‘They must have been able to see that it was us going forward. Why did they do this? Do they want Gaddafi to win?’

‘Why is Nato dropping bombs east of Brega when Gaddafi’s forces are to the west?’ asked Omar Mohammed.

Salem Mislat added: ‘We were standing by our tanks and Nato fired rockets at us. Nato are liars. They are siding with Gaddafi.’

Rebel commander Ayman Abdul-Karim said he saw airstrikes hit tanks and a rebel convoy, which included a passenger bus carrying fighters.

Despite the presence of forward air controllers guiding missiles to their targets with lasers and pinpoint technology, the apparent blunder illustrated the difficulties Nato forces face.

Rebel discontent with Nato is growing. Opposition commanders have complained in recent days that airstrikes are coming too slowly and lacking the precision to give the rebels an edge.

Angry troops pointed out yesterday that the convoy, which included tanks, rocket launchers and armoured vehicles, was heading from the rebel lines towards Gaddafi’s so it should have been clear who they were.

You've got a friend ... :surprised:

How to avoid "friendly" fire? Libya rebels try pink.

AJDABIYA, Libya — Libyan rebels painted the roofs of their vehicles bright pink on Friday to avoid more friendly fire casualties after a NATO airstrike they said killed five fighters.

"We are painting the trucks so NATO won't hit us," said Salam Salim, a 29-year-old rebel militiaman.

The strike Thursday hit a rebel tank column as it advanced on the disputed oil port of Brega, causing a confused insurgent retreat back from Ajdabiya, gateway to the uprising's stronghold in Benghazi.

NATO, which is enforcing a no-fly zone in Libya aimed at protecting civilians, on Friday acknowledged that its planes were probably responsible for the friendly fire incident, the second in a week. Officials noted that the alliance had no information that the rebels were now using tanks that oncebelonged to Moammar Gadhafi's military.

Rebels were still angry and jittery on Friday about the accident and scattered quickly when a volley of artillery shells from Gadhafi forces thumped around the western gate to Ajdabiya in the afternoon.

Ahmed Ignashy, a doctor at Ajdabiya hospital, said about six rebels were wounded in skirmishes Friday 12 miles west along the Mediterranean coast road.

He expressed the despondency in rebel ranks and impatience that NATO airpower has not been decisive. "I don't know what is happening, really. NATO struck us yesterday and today tanks from the Gadhafi forces. Where is NATO?"

Another NATO strike last week killed 13 rebels, including ambulance staff, on the outskirts of Brega.

[color:red]"Twice they've hit us by accident now," grumbled Belgassim Awamy, a rebel volunteer near the western entrance of Ajdabiya.

"NATO is an alliance against the Libyan people," said Alaa Senudry, another rebel standing nearby.

NATO says Gadhafi forces are sheltering near civilian areas, making it difficult to hit them effectively from the air.

Some rebels insisted Gadhafi aircraft had staged Thursday's attack, despite the fact that his air force has been grounded by the NATO planes.

"That was Moammar, it came from the south," said Wanis Boumarie, a former policeman turned rebel volunteer, when another rebel blamed the attack on NATO."

Tell Republican Bushit that. He's the one who got the USA and her allies involved in an absolutely futile war in Iraq looking for non existent WMD needlessly sacrificing thousands of US and allied personnel in the process..not counting the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and the reason the US$ is dropping in value daily.

Obama has been much much smarter in the way he has limited US involvement but at the same time prevented a certain massacre Rwanda style if Gadaffi's henchmen had got into Benghazi, leaving Gadaffi even more emboldened and empowered than ever.

You should be proud of your President... he's the best you've had for decades.

I saw Sarah Palin talk the other day about foreign policy .. she was frighteningly clueless... a female Dan Quayle.. no she's worse... she's a Jo Bjelke Peterson meets Pauline Pantsdown (Aussie readers only!) If she or her ilk get elected, USA will be in for big big trouble ahead. Up2u.

The quoted remark is racist...it seems Fox Noise and the commentator don't mind fighting against injustice anywhere.... just so long as its on behalf of good white Christian folk!

.

Terry Jones and Rush Limbaugh went to the same school and graduated in 1969. It does seem certain people really do get packaged together.

If you want to have a good read, read Sarah Palin's book. The book has nothing of substance and appears to be written for third grade readers and above.
