The difference is that the killers are in the early parts of the Bible, which eventually developed over the years into the tolerant, pacifist, socialist Jesus. Then 600 years later Muhammad came along, decided he was a prophet, and put everything back the way it had been in the most primitive early biblical times.

Christianity has strayed a long way from Jesus's teachings, and the fundies in the US are bending them even more. But islam remains quite true to the teachings of their "prophet" - and that is what the problem is. 7th century rules do not fit well in the 21st century.

Always find it interesting that people are capable of holding two wholly contradictory beliefs at the same time (eg, thou shalt not kill - and then being all gung ho to see adversaries killed).

It is also a bit of a contradiction for Israel to assassinate scientists (civilians) and be pretty open about it -- and then condemn this kind of tit-for-tat reaction. What does one expect?

Very skeptical this was Mossad. They wouldn't have made it look like the Marx Brothers go Jihad -- this was amateur night at the Apollo. Piss poor diplomacy by Iran in burning bridges with Thailand. And this kind of behavior does strike a little apprehension at the thought of these folks with a nuke.

Eventually some crazy person somewhere is going to get their hands on one.

You guys see Islam versus Christianity too black and white. While radical islam seem to keep the people in middle age, there are islamic societies which are different. Just look at Turkey it's an economic powerhouse with a growth rate of 9%.

Also Islam can show very, very different faces. In Germany we have around 4 Mio. muslims. A small percentage are radical islamists (9/11 was partly prepared in Hamburg). Those send their kids to the radical madrases where they only learn about the Koran. Others are very liberal like the Muslims in the industrial town of Duisburg who just sent an open letter to the catholic bishop _not_ to close a Catholic church (for lack of priests), because the catholic and muslim communities have supported each other in the past years.

And in Germany we have some fundamental Christians as well - luckily not that many as in the USA - who are against modern society, against science (evolution, e.g.) and who think that the have to follow the lifestyle described in a 2.000 year old book...

By the way in the USA more than 50% of the people deny evolution...

A Pakistani colleague - a rather unreligious one - blamed so much of the problem on the madrasas. He said there aren't enough public schools in Pakistan, so poor parents have to send their children to the madrasas. The madrasas teach them hatred and intolerance, and reward them for memorising the Qu'ran word for word, contradictions and all. He claimed the US could do better spending its money on funding more Pakistani public schools instead of bombs so that parents wouldn't have to send children to be indoctrinated at the madrasas. He had a point, but the politicians can't see it that way.

p.s. 50% of the population in American can't even spell evolution (or probably creation for that matter either). The schools have been being dumbed down for years, aiming more at "feel good" education than real learning. There is even a pass-fail system in many places. No reward for hard work, just do the minimum to pass. WTF?

I downloaded the complete series of "Doonesbury" cartoons last year. A recurring theme is the main protagonists school, Walden College, that after being sued by a student for receiving less then an A+ (on the grounds that it would cause him financial hardship if it prevented him getting into law school), promotes itself by promising every student will graduate regardless of grades or class attendance.
