LA Thais tend to be educated and not Issan farmers. LA now has 3 Thai temples, so I've been told. I know there are several Thai language newspapers, since I've seen them. I have taught several LA Thais. Universities are so much cheaper here that their families send them to Bangkok to study.

PAD foils Thaksin's meeting in LA

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra cancelled a meeting with his supporters at Thai town, north of downtown Los Angeles, USA, on Sunday evening (LA time) after about 2,000 yellow-shirts also gathered near the venue, the Post Today website reported.

Post Today quoted a report in Siamtown US, a leading weekly Thai newspaper in LA, California, that Thaksin was scheduled to meet his followers and red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters at a private dinner organised by the “Red USA†group at Thailand Plaza on Hollywood Boulevard at 6pm (8am Thai time Monday).

He was then to address the crowd from a makeshift stage built on the plaza’s parking lot at 8pm.

The report said UDD core member Darunee Kritboonyalai, wearing a wig in the colours of the Thai flag, first led dozens of red-shirts along the street to the plaza.

However, about 5.30pm, about 300 yellow-shirt supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), many holding placards, started to occupy the space around the plaza. The crowd reportedly grew to about 2,000 by 7pm.

About 9pm, a car believed to be bringing Thaksin to the meeting was seen driving around the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, there was no sign of the former premier at the venue.

The report said Thaksin finally phoned in to apologise to the red-shirts for his no-show, saying the PAD protesters had prevented him entering the plaza.

Siamtown US earlier reported that there were concerns about a possible confrontation between supporters and opponents of Thaksin at the event and police were called to ensure order.

Event organiser Chao Suatae reportedly said about 500 guests were due to attend the gathering and that Thaksin was likely to address the crowd non-stop for two hours.

You'd have to wonder where his balls are, if he has any, not being able to call in the army to 'control' the situation, may have caused him to run away...

Bravely bold Sir Robin

Rode forth from Camelot.

He was not afraid to die,

Oh brave Sir Robin.

He was not at all afraid

To be killed in nasty ways.

Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin.

He was not in the least bit scared

To be mashed into a pulp.

Or to have his eyes gouged out,

And his elbows broken.

To have his kneecaps split

And his body burned away,

And his limbs all hacked and mangled

Brave Sir Robin.

His head smashed in

And his heart cut out

And his liver removed

And his bowls unplugged

And his nostrils raped

And his bottom burnt off

And his pen--

"That's... that's enough music for now lads,

*** there's dirty work afoot*** ???."

Brave Sir Robin ran away.

("No!")

Bravely ran away away.

("I didn't!")

When danger reared it's ugly head,

He bravely turned his tail and fled.

("no!")

Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about

("I didn't!")

And gallantly he chickened out.

****Bravely**** taking ("I never did!") to his feet,

He beat a very brave retreat.

("all lies!")

Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!

("I never!")

Former PM Thaksin Forced to Cancel Events in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (8/12 )- Former Thai PM was the subject of major protests in Los Angeles during an announced visit to Thai temple in Chino Hills, and a visit to Thailand Plaza on Hollywood Boulevard. Thaksin cancelled after after some 2,000 royalists gathered along the roads at the venue to prevent him entering. Thaksin’s meeting with red shirt/UDD supporters was scheduled for Thaitown in LA on Sunday evening. This was after he quickly cancelled an announced visit to a temple in Chino Hills, due to protesters.

As reported earlier, members of the People's Alliance for Democracy denounced the visit in a letter (6/7) two months prior, stating,"We have strong reason to believe that Thaksin Shinawatra is trying to gain entrance to the United States. He is a fugitive who has been evading a two-year prison sentence for corruption while holding public office in Thailand. Furthermore, he has also evaded prosecution of multiple cases in which he was indicted on charges of corruption, bribery, tax evasion, abuse of power, and well documented extra-judicial killings and countless violations of human rights of Thai citizens. More than 2,500 citizens, including innocent children, were murdered because of the heavy handed policies of the war on drugs and anti-Muslim policies of his regime. The details of all these cases are on file with Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission, as have been reported by Shawn Crispin of Asia Times on October 13, 2006. Some of the examples are the killing of 9-year old, Nong Fluke, by the Thai police on February 23, 2003, during the war on drugs campaign; the Tak Bai incident on October 25, 2004 where 78 Thai Muslim civilians died from suffocation after being hand cuffed and stacked on top of each other for over three hours...."

Boonchu of Los Angeles, stated,"He tried to get into the country in an effort to raise money for the Red Shirts, in an effort to support the Red Shirts in Thailand. Thaksin is a fugitive from the law. The Thai people support the extradiction of Thaksin, and they did everything to bring him back , but not that his sister is the prime minister, the government is allowing him to run free... We are disappointed with the Obama administration he was given a visa and allowed to travel to the United States. His presence creates violence between the Yellow Shirt and Red Shirts, as he fundraises for the Red Shirt movement. Thaksin has been given a 15-day visa. For the past few days, he has been fundraising in Hawaii, New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Chicago. We have learned that a lot of Thai money has been donated. That is why we have come out in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Las Vegas, in an effort to show him that the Thai people still remember what he has done...."

In a letter (6/7) by the People's Alliance for Democracy, members stated,"America needs to stand firm for democracy and its ideal of respecting the rule of law and human rights. The U.S. Administration must not allow Thaksin Shinawatra, who not only has been accused of countless, well publicized and documented human rights violations, but also convicted by the Thai supreme court for corruption, (not to mention many other of charges of corruption and abuse of power still pending against him) to enter the United States... Instead of forging the future of U.S. relations with Thaksin Shinawatra, we strongly urge the U.S. Administration to heed our requests stated in this letter, and side with the great majority of the people of Thailand for a secure and truly democratic government and society in Thailand that will be strong and enduring just like in the U.S. America and Thailand have been good friends and close allies for almost 200 years. We sincerely hope the relationship between our two beloved countries will continue to be good and strong for forever. Though he was on good terms with Thaksin Shinawatra, President George W. Bush refused to allow the convicted ex-Thai PM to set his feet in the U.S. during his presidential term. We sincerely hope that President Obama, and the related governmental agencies as well as Congressional members of both Houses will be far-sighted and prudent to reject Thaksin Shinawatra’s entry visa application not allowing his dirty feet, bloody hands, and corrupted mind to contaminate the U.S. soil...."

Suriyasai Katasila, coordinator of the Green Politics Group, yesterday hailed the yellow shirts' US protest. He said,"The gathering also served to denounce the US which had failed to honour its extradition treaty with Thailand and instead granted Thaksin a visa..." Furthermore, he stated,"will lodge a petition with the National Anti-Corruption Commission this week against a number of individuals and agencies for dereliction of duty for failing to seek the extradition of Thaksin while in the US to stand trial in Thailand. On the list are Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, the Office of the Attorney General and police.."

According to Political Prisoners of Thailand,"It is not new for there to be competing red and yellow shirts in the U.S. Both groups have strong followings there. Yellow shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul spent considerable energy in developing PAD groups, particularly in LA. This was partly about selling some television and partly about fundraising for PAD...."
