Red Bull Founder's Grandson Arrested For Fatal Hit-And-Run

Hi,

"His body dragged about 200 metres along the road."

Assuming that wasn't a typo, this guy must have been going quite fast. Can't imagine a body would get dragged for 200 metres if he was driving the legal limit. Which is probably 50km/hr on that road I guess.

Stopping distance (time to react plus hitting the brakes) is ca. 50 m, if you drive 50 km/h. A Ferrari has much better brakes than a usual car (right Bubi?) so it should be shorter, but if you are drunk and/or are driving much faster....

But it might be that this guy didn't stop at all.

I guess a specialist can see from the destruction of the car's front window alone, if the driver was speeding.

Inquiry finds cop was rammed from behind

post-98-0-59965500-1346899509.jpg

A forensic investigation has found that a Thong Lor police officer did not cut in front of the Ferrari of Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhya with his motorcycle but was hit by the sports car from the rear.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Jarumporn Suramanee said results indicated that the Ferrari driven by Mr Vorayuth, grandson of Chaleo Yoovidhya, the founder of the popular Red Bull energy drink, hit the motorcycle rode by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert from behind which caused the officer to be killed instantly after suffering a broken neck.

After the crash, the officer's body hit the car's windshield before falling to the road.

Autopsy results revealed his body was not dragged by the car on the road, Pol Maj Gen Jarumporn said. However, the car dragged the motorcycle for about 100 metres.

Pol Col Chumpol Phumphuang, chief of Thong Lor police station, said police were waiting for results of a blood alcohol test conducted on Mr Vorayuth.

Mr Vorayuth yesterday paid his respects and made an apology to the late police officer at a Bangkok temple.

The 27-year-old, clad in black clothes and glasses, was accompanied by his mother Daranee to Wat That Thong yesterday evening, where the funeral ceremony of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian was being held.

He apologised to the police officer's relatives and sat down in front of the coffin holding the body of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian where he paid his respects and apologised to the dead officer.

Mr Vorayuth's lawyer said his client had not been drinking before the accident, but instead imbibed alcohol after he hit the policeman with his car. :spin:

Senator Samak Chaowapanant, who is the lawyer of the Yoovidhya family, said Mr Vorayuth did not drink any alcohol in his residence on Sukhumvit Soi 53 in the early morning on Monday before he was involved in the crash on Sukhumvit Soi 47.

"Boss was very sad," the senator said, referring to Mr Vorayuth by his nickname. "I understand that after the crash and his surrender, Boss drank that night to relieve his tenseness ... but he did not drink before the incident happened."

Senator Samak said Mr Vorayuth drove home without stopping to check the body of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian because he was shocked and afraid.

that is a new one, gonna have to remember that one......

Yep, first you do a hit-and-run with a Ferrari, probably thinking that no one in the area knows the car, even if you live around the corner, and than you have a couple of glasses of Whiskey while the police is standing outside the door with alcohol test set in the hand.

Maybe they need to do an IQ test with the guy. It could be that he isn't capable to drive any motorized vehicle at all.

Red Bull heir to face drunk charge

Results of a blood alcohol level test on hit-and-run suspect Vorayuth Yoovidhya showed that he was over the legal limit to drive a car, police said on Thursday.

Pol Lt-Col Viradol Tubtimdee of Thong Lor police station said Mr Vorayuth's blood sample contained 63 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, or a reading of 0.063%. The legal blood-alcohol limit in Thailand is 0.05%.

"Mr Vorayuth will face an additional charge of drunk driving," Pol Lot Col Viradol said.

Pol Lt-Col Akharawin Sukhonthawit, deputy chief of Thong Lor station, said a disciplinary committee had ruled that Pol Lt-Col Pannapon Nammuang, a Thong Lor police station inspector, acted illegally by trying to arrest a scapegoat to help Mr Vorayuth.

The committee will propose to the metropolitan police chief that he dismiss Pol Lt-Col Pannapon from the force, Pol Lt-Col Akharawin said.

About 5.30am on Monday, on Sukhumvit road, a Ferrari driven Mr Vorayuth, 27-year-old grandson of Red Bull energy drink founder Chaleo Yoovidhya, slammed into the rear of the motorcycle ridden by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert, killing him instantly.

Mr Vorayuth fled to his home after the crash.

He currently faces charges of hit-and-run and reckless driving causing death

Police: Red Bull heir going 100k/h

Hit-and-run suspect and Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhya was likely to have been driving at more than 100 kilometres per hour before the fatal crash on Monday, an expert said.

Metropolitan Police Division 5 deputy chief Jirapat Phumjit on Thursday invited Sathon Wicharnwannalak , a physics lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, to help police calculate the speed of the Ferrari driven by Mr Vorayuth before the fatal accident on Sukhumvit Soi 47 early Monday morning.

Mr Sathon and investigators examined footage from a surveillance camera installed in front of a Mercedes-Benz service centre located near the mouth of Soi 45 to find out how fast the suspect had been driving before he slammed into the rear of the motorcycle ridden by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert, killing him instantly.

Mr Sathon said the footage showed the distance between Soi 45 and Soi 47 where the crash took place was 31 metres. However Mr Vorayuth’s super car took only one second to drive past it. According to an initial conclusion, the 27-year-old grandson of Red Bull energy drink founder Chaleo Yoovidhya, was believed to have been driving at a speed in excess of 100 kilometres per hour, Mr Sathon said.

I once tried the defense that I'd had 2 strong whiskeys moments before driving and would have been home before my blood/alcohol level was high enough to be illegal. On the basis that it takes time for the alcohol to get into the blood stream and that the police had dicked around for an hour before the blood test was taken.

I was thanked for my novel defense but in the absence of any evidence of actual absorption rates, convicted anyway. I did ask if reasonable doubt had been established and was told that this was NZ not TV.
