Army will closely monitor situation: Prayuth

Army Commander in Chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Wednesday that the army would be closely monitoring the situation following the government's announcement that it was imposing a state of emergency in Bangkok and its outskirts for two months.

He was not worried about the invocation of the decree but on its implementation by the authorities concerned.

The emergency decree could make the situation better or worse. The public might have to monitor the situation, he said.

"However if violence erupts and the situation spirals out of control, the army will have to intervene to settle the problems. However, I personally think that will not happen," Prayuth said. :nono:

He declined to comment on the government’s decision to invoke the decree, saying the army is still supporting the police, he main agency authorised by the decree to handle the situation.

"The army will provide protection for officials of concerned authorities, protesters and the public. We will not take sides and I hope people will understand and be fair to us in our jobs," he said.

Navy Seals commander insists foreign forces were brought in

Commander of the Navy’s special naval warfare unit, the Navy Seals, reaffirmed Wednesday that foreign armed forces were brought into the country to deal with the protesters.

Rear Admiral Winai Klom-in told a group of protesters from the People’s Democratic Reform Committee’s eastern branch he could not accept the use of foreign forces to kill Thai people.

He claimed that he had evidence to prove that foreign forces were brought into the country during the red-shirt protest in 2009 and 2010.

“I can confirm that our unit does not seek publicity or fame. Certain missions are top secret that must die with us. We do our job for the country even though we do not receive praise. We know by our hearts that we have done the job,†he told the crowd who showed up at his unit in Sattahip to give him moral support.

Rear Admiral Winai admitted that he wouldn’t care less whether he would be demoted, sacked or jailed for the confidential information he exposed about foreign armed elements and for the stance he has taken to side with the people instead of the government.

Protesters block Peace Keeping Center

Hundreds of anti-government protesters blocked the Office of the Defense Ministry’s Permanent Secretary inside Muang Thong Thanee Complex on Chaengwattana road urging soldiers to stop serving the Thaksin regime.

Protesters marched to the office of the defense permanent secretary Gen Nipat Thonglek, as the office is turned into a temporary office of the Peace Keeping Center.

Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was reported to be inside with her security staff to monitor the situation.

People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leader Bhuttipong Punnakan advised all protesters not to break into the compound, but to sit in front blowing whistles and waving flags, whille shouting for the military personnel at the office to leave their jobs and stop working for the regime.

Military personnel inside the office also greeted the protesters with hand clapping and cheers.

Protest leader Bhuttipong told the military personnel through loudspeaker that they came there just to urge all military staff to stop allowing the office being used as a place to give press conferences to accuse protesters every day.

The protest was peaceful, although security was tightened with soldiers holding protective shields to prevent any forced entry by protesters.

Protesters defy state of emergency

The government's decision to invoke the emergency decree to push for Feb 2 election is likely to backfire with protests set to expand and the Constitution Court expected to rule on an election postponement soon, political observers say.

...

A Pheu Thai Party source admitted it was a mistake for the government to declare a state of emergency as no incidents had taken place to justify the enforcement of the decree. Not only does the decree fail to deter protesters, it scares away tourists and makes the government look "incapable", said the source.

"The government has failed because it can't order the military to take the lead [in law enforcement] and has to let police do the job.

"And the government had a taste of embarassment when protesters surrounded the Royal Thai Police headquarters and defaced part of its name sign," said the source.
