waerth
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/State-of-emergency-announced-30224846.html The caretaker Cabinet announced the state of emergency for Bangkok and some parts of nearby provinces, which will last 60 days. The state of emergency was announced on TV by caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung. It will take effect on Wednesday. Chalerm said the government had to invoke the emergency decree to announce the state of emergency because the protests by the People's Democratic Reform Committee had turned violent. He said the demonstrations were not peaceful as PDRC leaders said. National Security Council Secretary-General Paradorn Pattanatabut said the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order would be changed to the Peacekeeping Centre. The new Peacekeeping Centre would be chaired by the police commissioner-general, Paradorn said. Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul told the press conference that he had been assigned by the Cabinet to supervise the Royal Thai Police. Issara Somchai, a PDRC leader, said the PDRC would continue its simultaneous rallies in Bangkok despite the state of emergency. "The emergency decree cannot overrule the people's constitutional rights," Issara said. He said the protests had so far caused no damage that warranted the state of emergency. Pom Michael
Good news for tourism industry! "This is to advise and update U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Thailand that the Thai government on January 21 imposed a 60-day state of emergency in Bangkok and several surrounding provinces, effective January 22. The decree provides the government additional authorities to deal with security challenges, such as impose curfews, ban certain assemblies, detain suspects without charge, and restrict information. The government has not yet specified what authorities it will invoke under the decree. We continue to advise citizens to avoid protests, demonstrations and large gatherings." waerth
tulsathit â€@tulsathit 59m Emergency gives govt immense power to censor media, make arrests, end gathering. All practically with little or without legal consequences. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 3m A few things about emergency decree: 1) It's rather unprecedented in terms of police taking centre stage. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 58s 2) Whether "aggression' justified it is up for debate. Suthep insisted ppl were unarmed. But govt can cite "invasions" of govt offices. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 42s 3) Suthep insisted it was govt who was breaking the law, i.e. defying Constitution Court, seeking illegal money to pay farmers. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 35s 4) Perhaps most importantly, Constitution prevents caretaker govt from using state manpower or resources to make electoral gains. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 41s 5) Effect on social media is up to enforcers. Observers expect same leniency as during previous election times. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 49s 6) Can pro-govt demonstrators gather?
waerth
tulsathit â€@tulsathit 46s 7) Are pro-Pheu Thai posts, newspaper content allowed? tulsathit â€@tulsathit 29s 8) If pro-govt content is allowed but anti-govt content is banned, will it be free and fair election? tulsathit â€@tulsathit 36s 9) If court rules govt violates charter with the emergency decree, entire Cabinet could be held accountable. tulsathit â€@tulsathit 1m To sum it up, with govt insisting on Feb 2 election, issuing the emergency decree is big gamble.
