The army has also granted itself wide-ranging powers to enforce its decision.

The military said it had taken the action to preserve peace and order.

The move comes after a long-running political crisis, and escalating tensions between the government and the opposition.

Earlier this month a court ordered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and several cabinet ministers to step down.

Sad day for Thai democracy.

An unelected yellow shirt mob of bully boys allowed to disrupt national elections with impunity, disenfranchise the majority of Thai citizens for the 3rd time in a row now, bring the country to its knees economically and the army steps in to defend them.

TIT. Interesting times we live in. The world is watching.

Is the elected government in control or the army? Until the PM does a live broadcast on TV, we can presume this is a coup

Thai government not consulted about martial law: PM's aide

BANGKOK, May 20, 2014 (AFP) - Thailand's embattled government was not consulted in advance by the military about the declaration of martial law but it is still in power, said the chief security adviser to Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan.

"The caretaker government still exists with Niwattumrong as caretaker prime minister. Everything is normal except the military is responsible for all national security issues," Paradon Pattanatabut told AFP.
