'Wonderful': Christina Annesley was a former Leeds University student

A British backpacker has died on a Thai holiday island.

Christina Annesley, from Orpington in south London, was found dead yesterday on the paradise island of Koh Tao.

The 23-year-old is believed to have been visiting Thailand as part of a four-month tour of south-east Asia.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British National in Thailand on 21 January 2014.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."

The cause of her death was not immediately clear although it is believed she may have died from natural causes.

Days before she died she posted pictures of her holiday on Twitter.

"In awe of how beautiful this place is," she wrote next to one.

On Monday she wrote: "Great, just as I finally make friends I have to shell out £60 for antibiotics and now can't afford to go out with them."

The Young Britons' Foundation, a conservative group with which Ms Annesley was affiliated, hailed her as a "wonderful girl" with "strong libertarian principles".

In a statement, the organisation said: "I am sorry to inform supporters of the Young Britons’ Foundation that Christina Annesley has died while on holiday.

"Christina attended a number of YBF conferences having already achieved a level of notoriety for her strong libertarian views while at Leeds University. Christina was a wonderful girl of strong libertarian principles, who made great waves amongst all of us who were lucky enough to know her.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this tragic time. RIP."

She studied history at Leeds University and was a former vice-chairman of Yorkshire Young Independence, as well as a former chairman of Leeds Conservative Future.

She was also a member of Ukip, and described herself as "very libertarian" and "anarcho-capitalist".

Ukip leader Nigel Farage tweeted: "Very sad and shocked to hear of the death of Christina Annesley. Thoughts and prayers with her family and friends."

Friend Chris Wales led tributes to her on Facebook, writing: "She was one of those people that lit up every party, every lunch, every event you visited; one of those faces you were delighted to see there. To a uniquely special person. We'll miss you."

Conservative European Parliamentary candidate Daniel Hamilton tweeted: "Very sad to hear of the untimely death of Christina Annesley. A free spirit, a bright spark, a one-off. Rest in peace."

Last year two British tourists were murdered on the island. The trial of two men charged over the murders began last month.

SURAT THANI — A 23-year-old British tourist was found dead yesterday on the southern island of Koh Tao, where two British backpackers were brutally murdered last September.

The woman, who British media have identified as Christina Annesley, was found dead in her bungalow on Haat Sai Ri Beach, the same beach that the bodies of British tourists David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, were found on in September 2014.

A police officer, who asked not to be named, said there was no apparent wounds on the deceased's body.

There was also no sign of intrusion or theft in her bungalow, according to the officer. Her body has been sent to Surat Thani Hospital for autopsy, he said.

The officer added that the bungalow is owned by Montriwat Toowichian, the same man who managed the bar where Miller and Witheridge were last seen on the night of 14 September, hours before their deaths.

According to British media, a Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed the death of a British national in Thailand.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Two 21-year-old Burmese migrant workers are currently being held in prison for allegedly murdering Miller and raping and murdering Witheridge. The two suspects have denied the charges.

The grisly murder of Miller and Witheridge made headlines around the globe last year and damaged Koh Tao's reputation as a popular diving destination for foreigners.

Slight typo ... "The grisly murder of Miller and Witheridge made headlines around the globe last year and damaged Koh Tao's reputation as a popular diving [dying] destination for foreigners."

Ah, there it is - another 23-year-old dead of "natural causes". Not impossible, certainly - disease or congenital flaw taking it's toll - but somehow that seems unlikely. Or just unlucky for the bar-owner dude.

I've got a trip in a few weeks - 28 days, but who's counting? - and this confirms it: I am going to stay firmly within the confines of very lowest Suk, Cowboy, mornings on Soi 4, late afternoon perhaps QPP, the late late night bars, and Pattaya.

No Koh Tao for me - don't dare risk my health and safety!

Hi,

Yes, I too noticed the amount. 3K Baht for some antibiotics is a lot of money, even accounting for the doctor's fee.

And I am sure this is just a concidence:

The officer added that the bungalow is owned by Montriwat Toowichian, the same man who managed the bar where Miller and Witheridge were last seen on the night of 14 September, hours before their deaths.

Sanuk!

Much as I enjoy taking the piss out of the BiB when it comes to Farangs dying in LOS, sensibly, perhaps they need media training and the media who report in English need English training.

However, scepticism resumes, comments and highlights are mine:

Police Rule Out Murder For Briton Found Dead on Koh Tao

SURAT THANI — A senior police officer has insisted that the 23-year-old British tourist who died on the southern island of Koh Tao this week was not murdered.

He was responding to early comparisons that were drawn to the two British backpackers, David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, who murdered on the island last year.

On Wednesday, Christina Annesley was found dead on in her bungalow on Haat Sai Ri Beach, the same beach that the battered bodies of Miller and Witheridge were found on in September 2014.

Annesley’s body was found by staff at the resort where she was staying, said Pol.Lt.Col. Chokechai Sutthimek, superintendent of Koh Tao Police Station. A cleaning worker went to check her room after she failed to show up at the reception desk on the day she was scheduled to check out, Pol.Lt.Col. Chokechai said.

"At this moment, we do not know the cause of her death. We did not find any assault on her body or signs of rummaging in her room. None of her belongings appear to be missing (the cleaning staff have had training, take ATM receipt as well as large sum of money, then, no one knows...)," said the officer from Koh Tao Police Station, which was established last year to provide more security on the island following the murders of Miller and Witheridge.

"We only found medicine in the room," said Pol.Lt.Col. Chokechai. "We are working to find out what kind of medicine it is." (the kind with Deet and cleaning fluid in it?)

Pol.Lt.Col. Chokechai stressed that Annesley's death does not appear to be a case of murder. Police will brief the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Bangkok, Thai public, and "social media" as soon as they have further details about the death, he said.

Pol.Lt.Col. Chokechai added that the British tourist's body is being kept at a temple on Koh Tao island while authorities wait for a ferry to Surat Thani Hospital on the mainland for an autopsy.

According to British media, a Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed the death of a British national in Thailand.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The Telegraph reported that Annesley's mother posted on Facebook that her daughter died of "natural causes." (if the police don't know, how does she? did someone from Thailand tell her?)

The grisly murder of Miller and Witheridge made headlines around the globe last year and damaged Koh Tao's reputation as a popular diving destination for foreigners.

Two 21-year-old Burmese immigrants were arrested on the island in October for allegedly murdering Miller and raping and killing Witheridge. The suspects initially confessed at a police press conference, but later retracted their confessions, which they said Thai police tortured them into making.

The twist of the events led many observers to accuse Thai police of using the two Burmese men as “scapegoats.†Police have repeatedly denied the allegation.

The two Burmese suspects are currently held in prison. Their court trial is set to start in September.

No signs of foul play in Briton's death

January 23, 2015 5:17 pm

Initial investigation has found no foul play in the death of a 23yearold British woman earlier this week in Surat Thani's Koh Tao.

The body of Christina Annesley, 23, was discovered in her rented bungalow, and there were no signs of ransacking or struggle. Police send the body, which showed no marks of aggression or injury, to Surat Thani Hospital's forensic division for further examination.

Pol General Ruangsak Jritake, deputy National Police chief, said Friday that police were focusing on examining the woman's room and nearby area as well as a thorough collection of forensic evidence. He said some medication has been found in the room, and police are checking to see if it is linked to the death.
