Flash, the Sutthisan precinct still does this. Every morning they are directing traffic during rush hour, and just like you mention, every New Years they get gifts from drivers.

Huay Kwang district does not do this, and the difference in traffic is noticeable.

KS, I used to work in Huay Kwang until about two years ago and there was always this policeman who was directing rush hour traffic in the soi behind Bangkok Hospital, always a smile on his face. Regular drivers (myself included) would always wish him or wave at him and he would respond in kind.He even remembered me on foot when I broke my elbow (in a cast, couldn't drive) and would give a friendly wave.

I remember the ones in Huay Kwang, haven't lived there for a while though. Out of Bangkok they often regulate traffic outside schools, which I like,
