Thai PM bans cannabis and hemp use on military premises

Thai officials are continuing to clamp down on the ‘happy plant’ in various institutions across the country. PM Prayut Chan-o-cha has now ordered a ban against all uses of cannabis and hemp on military premises.

So if any soldiers out there were hoping for any chance of bonding with their pals over a joint, those dreams have now been dashed. Prayut has now ordered all units under the Defense Ministry, military branch, and Royal Thai Police, to raise awareness among officers about regulations, and the happy plant’s risks. Deputy Spokesperson of Defense Ministry Jitnat Punnotok said…

“All organisations under the Defence Ministry must follow the Public Health Ministry regulations on cannabis use. They are allowed to consume cannabis for medicinal purposes but not for recreational use,”

Servicemen are also strictly prohibited from posting pictures or videos of themselves using cannabis on social media, said the ministry, because it would be “inappropriate.”

Earlier this week the use of cannabis was also banned on campuses of universities and agencies in Thailand. However, a university can promote cannabis usage, only if it’s supported by medical professionals’ advice.

This week, Bangkok Governor Chadchart admitted he was concerned about the lack of clarity on cannabis policies after the decriminalisation of cannabis on June 9. He feared the lack of guidelines and accompanying legislation has led to confusion and incorrect assumptions following the announcement.

Thank buddha for that, I'd hate to think that persons under the influence, would be contributory to Thai Planes dropping out of the sky... Or submarines getting stuck in the Chao Praya....

I’ve noticed a lot of these rule changes make people nervous about what counts as legit use, and having proper paperwork helps a ton. I’ve been using products that come with a coa, which makes it much easier to show everything is medically approved and tested if anyone questions it. Keeps things calm and avoids drama, especially with all the shifting rules.

Ah weed…and the memories I have from out…er sort of. As a Federally licensed Technician, I am subject to federal drug and alcohol  testing laws. As such, I have not engaged for over 40+ years…er well, brief 2 week period when I was off for a knee replacement…but anyway, I remember it all, Acapulco gold, Sin semilla, Colombian gold, the dreaded Panama red, Maui Wowie…when I walked into a “legal weed “Dispensary”” here in NorCal, I had a hard time finding a mellow strain. Too many choices and every “dispensary” has different stuff. I recall the weed back in the day ranging from 2% “Mexican rag weed” to 7+%. Sin The new stuff is like 20-40%THC and all sorts of “designer strains!” Kids today are spoiled! As for the laws here, while Cannabis is “legal for recreational purposes” in some states, it remains federally illegal and thus is “technically” still illegal. Illegal to transport, import/export possess on any federally licensed/regulated transportation vehicle etc…So it remains up in the air, very similar to Thailand’s laws it seems.

Last trip to Hua Hin, we saw a growing operation, looked big and expensive, a lot of jobs and revenue invested. So what happens to all those people if the laws revert to the old laws..? How do you put the genie back in the bottle?  The USA tried to outlaw alcohol years back…stupid really, but the early feminists, the “women’s temperance union” led the charge and FDR being hen pecked and pussy whipped went along with it…for a few years, there was supposed to be no booze bought/sold or produced  or imported to the USA…that didn’t work, the “Mafia” took not of the demand and profited greatly from it, corruption soared to new levels and the country was worse off for the prohibition….Same with weed and all drugs really. Now the problem here is the hard drugs are cut with fentanyl and other crap, no quality coke or heroin etc…thus users who are/were used to a certain potency are now o.ding on stuff they assumed was same as the usual. Regulat, control the potency and quality and sell at a reasonable price, take the profit and violence out of it.  God I can’t wait to retire and “spark one up!”

Thanks for the nice long post. Interesting read and it brought back some fine memories, like the list of classic dope you mentioned, now unfortunately all gone. I think you named about all of them, the only vintage ones you left out were maybe Thai-Stick and Jamaican. Anyway, as Bob Hope used to say: thanks for the memories… However, don’t be dazzled by the numbers they claim in weed shops these days as it pure B.S. I mean 20-40% THC is pure fantasy… If you had purchased their most potent weed and smoked it, I believe you would have been extremely disappointed as it would not hold a candle to any of the classic strains that you mentioned. I’ve written about this before so I’m not going to rehash it, but all the weed available these days in weed shops has been stripped of most of its original THC using butane, so the stuff people are buying these days is maybe only 2% at best. Any of the classic weeds you mentioned would stone you numb next to the shit they are selling now labeled 40% which will hardly give you a buzz – don’t believe me, try it. If you want to get high on THC these days forget buying weed, your best bet is the concentrated extracts which you will have to vape or dab onto worthless weed. Of course you could grow some of the real stuff yourself…

I also worked for many years where I needed a security clearance and I know what it’s like to have random drug-testing hanging over you and your employment. You would think the powers at be would give people a break these days as it’s available as recreational in many states – one step away from being legal. I don’t know if private employers are still doing random drug tests on employees, but the US Govt. has not changed its policy as far as I know. You can thank Ronald Reagan for that one. When I first started working in Aerospace I quit smoking weed for maybe 15 years, then when I was maybe five or so years from retirement and you could get a note from a doctor to purchase medical marijuana in California – I said fuck it and took my chances. Never had a problem and in fact, in all my years I’ve never heard of anyone being asked to take a drug test after the pre-employment test required by law - again thanks to Reagan. So, Old Hippie, maybe you have very little to worry about these days. I guess it comes down to - do you feel unlucky? If I were you I wouldn’t worry about it and would indulge if I felt like it. Up to you, but I’d never advertise or mention it to fellow employees…

Of course I’m retired now, so I don’t have to worry about these things. Instead, these days my only worry is staying alive!! BTW, I think FDR was elected president on his pledge that he would end prohibition, if I'm not mistaken.

Happy Trails,

I've had conversations with Gen Z and Millennials about how it was for us Boomers. We never doubted what we were consuming unlike today.

I definitely worry about “getting popped” on a drug test! I have 2 years or so till retirement AND, I am working on a disability case, so getting popped would be costly to say the least.  I’ll wait the 2 years and light up some “chem dog” or something (maybe grow my own), on the way out the door.

I still remember in my youth driving around in North Queensland after rain and climbing fence to collect golden mushrooms growing in the grass and cattle dung of paddocks.
