sayjann Posted August 5, 2002 Report Share Posted August 5, 2002 i'm surprised about RH in phuket. upstairs is 'smoking joe's' and the falang owners run a very tight ship. never had any trouble in there and have spent many happy hours there. only thing i do not like is the 600 BF and 120 ladydrinks. only go-go in patong which charges this high. even though some bar beers charge 120 for ladydrinks. Guest Posted August 6, 2002 Report Share Posted August 6, 2002 I think "exposing" rip offs here is a great idea. some of the posts should be sent to the owners of these types of bars. with the net, the scammers will be shown off quickly. But, I like to hear what people claim, especially if it is corroborated. I take all accusations with a grain of salt, however. (not with regards to Tina's, in particular...I mean any accusations) I agree with the point Danno5 relayed. I think that it is the staff, and not the owner, who generally starts the padding. For instance, my bill was too high at Dollhouse Pattaya. DH-P is a well run place, and I really doubt that the owner would try any funny business for 200THB. Fatbastard Posted August 6, 2002 Report Share Posted August 6, 2002 You wouldn't black list a bar that you enjoy because of an accusation from someone that they had received a bullshit bill, surprisingly I have only encountered it twice in 12 years. But I keep a pretty keen eye in what goes in the pot. In fact I had more trouble with restaurant bills, but I think thats more incompetence than a rort. The only thing that makes me think the Tina padding was a little bit more than just a "staff" thing was that shifty look the Owner had when I tackled him about it. I'm with you on two points...he can look "shifty" and he should darn well know what's going on in the bar. Little history here for those who might be interested. "Toy" is the "mamasan". Maybe 15 years ago she had a bar at NEP--think it's Lucky Lukes now. She sold it and a few years later opened the Toy Bar on Soi Cowboy (circa 1989) with her "papasan" husband, a former Thai Army officer. About 1995, they sold the bar and were out of the biz for a few years. Maybe 1998, the mamasan opened the Tina Bar and the papasan opened the "New Toy Bar" (nearby). Last time I was in the Tina Bar was about 6 months ago. I saw the papasan there for the first time (apparently, he got rid of the New Toy Bar). The mamasan is a straight-up gal. Never had a bill padded from any of her places...and make no mistake, the Tina Bar is hers (unless she got tired of the years of her husband sampling the hired help and split the sheets). I've known her to be very generous with "drinks on the house" and giving me tips on the gals that are "okay" and ones I might want to avoid. Over the years, I've known her to be a "throw-back" to the old days when the "mama" was really part of the "mamasan" label. She really looked after the girls and they all revered her. She looked after the customers too. The papasan mainly looked after himself and never came close to getting the respect she enjoyed. Okay, after the history lesson, I'll just say that I'm really surprised that the Tina Bar would intentionally pad a bill. These people have been in the biz too long not to know that such a practice will kill their patronage. This is not to say that a "renegade" employee might not try to pull a fast one. "Nuff said".
