If you block the pop-ups, what happens about the legitimate applications that try to open new windows?

And most applications try to use JavaScript to make your user experience better. As a developer, I find all the users that love to turn off cookies and JavaScript, etc, paranoid luddite pains. In fact, I wish people wouldn't choose browsers apart from the latest versions of IE..

There are sites that will open a large number of windows, sometimes with pornographic content. In this case I think turning off JavaScript is a good idea. Cookies don't create any significant security hazard but if you don't want people to se where you have been they should either be turned of or edited. Cookies in Netscape can be edited with a text editor regardless of what the header in the file says.

Netscapes home page for one has started to open extremely annoying popup windows. Every time I open Netscape and start to type in an URL a popup window opens and takes over the input focus before I'm finnished. This is extremely annoying.

I to am a developer but not of websites. If I designed technical software as poorly as many websites are designed I would soon have to join the dole queue. (No personal criticism intended)

Hi,

"If you block the pop-ups, what happens about the legitimate applications that try to open new windows?"

They won't open anymore either. Maybe a bit annoying, but it beats the hell out of unwanted pop-ups in my opinion.

I am a developer myself, web mostly nowadays, and understand your point, but I do switch all of this stuff of myself nevertheless.

As for browsers, I don't really care that much as long as they are all W3C compliant. That way my code will usually work fine.

Luckily things are getting better. I have basically given up on trying to get the site working for Netscape 4.7x, just too many bugs/problems.

Many scripters are not as benevolent as you may be. That's why I like AdSubtract so much. You can selectively (by site) determine who can serve you cookies, script, banners, applets, etc. So you can let the good guys do their thing, but block the bad guys. Since I've been using AdSubtract I've never seen another popup or banner, and it does not hinder my browsing at all. If I disable it, I am bombarded by popups within minutes. It allows me to view exactly what I want to view and nothing else. I now cannot imagine browsing without it, because popups have simply gotten out of control all over the web.

And, no, I don't have a financial interest in AdSubtract. smile.gif

"Cookies don't create any significant security hazard but if you don't want people to se where you have been they should either be turned of or edited"

Just to make this clear: Web sites can only see their own cookies - the cookies they created themselves. They can't see other cookies, so they don't know where else you've been. So, why you'd turn them off is a mystery to me.

Of course, if you're in an Internet cafe, you may wish to delete all cookies AND all temporary files AND all of the history information but you'd do this last thing.

The sites that open lots of other windows, usually with pornographic content, are usually other pornographic sites! If other sites are using this annoying practice, I suggest you boycott them and let them know why.

I suppose that you mean websites!? -- Let me tell you that it's a real mess to get a website to look the same in Netscape AND Internet Explorer. There is a distinct difference in how these browsers handles the code.

As a web developer myself, I try to make things cross-browser compatible but I do have to give that up at times, because it's just a pain in the a**. The vast majority of web users utilize Internet Explorer so that's what I, and many others, set for.

I recently switched to Mozilla and I have to say it's quite nifty, but -- wow -- it really is apparent that the majority of websites are optimized for Internet Explorer. Nevertheless, Mozilla handles it quite well, but now and then you lose the intended look & feel plus functionality of certain websites...
