The United Fruit Company and predecessors to Dole, literally changed governments in Central America. The CIA as well. Not saying the countries wouldn't still be poor but we have hurt far more than we have helped the situation down there. The Caribbean as well. It's pretty well documented and accepted as fact the CIA intentionally ruined the Jamaican economy because its prime minister at the time was socialistic and befriended Castro.

Fascinating coming from a Yale prof, but note that he is in computer science and thus outside of the usual leftist crowd. I'll bet he catches hell for this at Yale though anyway.

I watched a piece on TV these days, some German TV company sent people to watch Trump speaking to the crowd somewhere. A man came along and  started elaborating on public  German unrest concerning the Northstream pipeline. The truth is that this pipeline causes as much unrest in Germany as tuktuk pilot Somchai farting at the traffic light at Asoke junction. I guess 80 % of all Germans have no idea what this pipeline is about and the rest gives a fuck. It is only President Donald who  keeps on telling his mentally underdeveloped followers that Germany totally depends on the gas that ( one day ) will come from Russia this way. One wonders what Germany depends on these days without the pipeline . The percentage of gas that we buy from Russia is actually shrinking.

The disturbing aspect of all this : the aforementioned Trump follower did not carry a gun, did not show tattoos all over and did obviously belong to sort of "normal" people. But he believes what Trump keeps on telling them over and over. On another occasion Trump was joking about a now congressman physically attacking a reporter at an earlier occasion. The crowd went berserk with joy. He is deliberately trying to marginalise the press as long as it is not Fox or Breitbart.

There are bigger brains than mine on this board, but I hazard a simple formula ::

Degrade the living standard of yer peasants  //  don't tell them its the rich making out like Bandits that's the cause of this lowered standard of living  //  exort them to believe, anything that's on the horizon, as there's always something on the horizon, other poor people, walking way from famine and death, etc  //  figure out the scapegoats, that will allow the rich to continue getting richer  //  energise yer peasants against he scapegoats  //  with luck and a following wind, yer peasants will rapturously support you  //  see Hitler (vis historic)

Now I've been to deaths entrance-way and back again, I'm seeing that the very rich, do think they are gods, they do think that they are superior beings, the less vile of them, have the sense to keep quiet about this and try and do some good, but primarily still will try and make their money pile bigger...

The money comes from somewhere, generally from you and me.

The scope and breadth of the attempted bombing is almost normalized to some extent.Its completely unique in America that so many people, as high up as they are, were targeted. This appears to be an organized act by a group, not some "lone wolf". It could be a lone wolf but he took months and months to do this. 

And the rhetoric contributed to it but the rhetoric is normalized. We are 'used to it'. And the ones who are used to it are the ones who are supposed to be fighting against it. 

My guess is eventually this will all backfire on the alt right and similar such people. Why? Because there are just too many of them who committed to violence. Not all, but there are a wide variety of splinter groups, the proud boys, various other groups, the myriad "militias" we've heard about for decades. These guys are triggered and feel emboldened. This is the land of mass shootings in 'normal' times. 

Every single one of the ones targeted were hated by Trump and spoken about with vitriol on right win media. Antifa has been around a while and other than the G8 summit or the Bilderberg meetings, we never really head much out of them. There is some false equivalency in mind to to nuance condoning supremacist groups. 70 years ago we would have cheered a group like Antifa in Germany. They target specifically these nationalists/supremacists. Legally wrong, morally, why should I give a shit? Really? These other groups target EVERYONE. They just arrested members of the Proud Boys for inciting violence and many of these groups have as part of their initiation require an act of violence which may explain a few things.
