Flashermac
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has postponed its annual Loy Krathong celebrations in honour of the late Supreme Patriarch. TAT deputy governor for domestic marketing Thawatchai Arunyik said festive activities will be suspended because the country is in mourning. The government has extended the mourning period to Nov 23. The festival falls on Nov 17 this year. He said the TAT will discuss the Loy Krathong celebrations, which are usually organised in Bangkok and other major tourist destinations, when the mourning period is over. He noted that the festival - celebrated annually on the full moon of the 12th lunar month - is one of the country's top tourist attractions. At night, people float decorated krathong (small, lotus-shaped vessels) on rivers, canals and ponds. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2429903/Peace-Day-Reminder-millions-lives-lost-war-artists-stencil-9-000-bodies-Normandy-beach.html

radioman
Not to appear insensitive here but how's the mood in the Thailand? All as normal? Bars open and people out enjoying the evenings? I'll be home in a couple of weeks and hoping to be out and about. Planned the break to coincide with Loy Krathong and my birthday.
Bar4
Everything is open as normal. Just a brief blip on Friday night when bars were shut. Touch wood it stays that way. Cheers, Mark

khunsanuk
Hi, I really wonder how many people of the general public really care about his passing. No disrespect meant, but I don't get the impression it is a big deal to the vast majority of people. Sanuk!

Flashermac
If you hadn't been told the country is in mourning, you wouldn't know it. The Supreme Patriarch was an admirable person and all, but he was 100 years old and had spent the last decade in poor health living in a hospital. It is not like his passing was unexpected. Also, Buddhists are taught that life is transcient and one should not cling to it. People are saddened that he is gone, but do not want to make a big fuss over it.
