Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian censors Friday banned the Hollywood blockbuster Noah from the predominantly Muslim South-East Asian country for depicting one of Islam's prophets, an official said.

"Noah contravenes one of the guidelines, which is that the face of a prophet cannot be shown," said Abdul Halim Hamid, chairman of the country’s Film Censorship Board.

The film starring Russel Crowe is based on the biblical story of the patriarch who built an ark ahead of the great flood.

Noah also features as one of the most significant Islamic prophets in the Koran.

"Any depiction of any prophet is prohibited in Islam," Abdul Halim said.

Other Islamic countries including several in the Middle East and North Africa have also banned the movie.

"The Quran does not explicitly forbid images of Muhammad, but there are a few hadith (supplemental teachings) which have explicitly prohibited Muslims from creating visual depictions of figures."

p.s. Presumably, Noah took a pair of pigs aboard the ark. :hmmm:

You have to understand something, Flash.

The prophet Muhammad's day job could be charitably described as "brigand". Or maybe "thug". People like that tend to draw attention from the civil authorities, in the form of "WANTED!" posters. If you outlaw making "visual depictions" of figures, you make it hard for the police to make a "WANTED!" poster.

A similar principle is behind Islam's prohibition of dogs. Dogs have this really annoying habit of barking at strangers when they sneak into the dog's owner's house or campsite. This wakes up the owners, and the owners at that time tended to grab swords when they go looking for the reason the dog is barking. Makes it HARD for a thief to make a dishonest living, it does.
