Thailand investigates complaint by sister of murdered British tourist Court of justice says it has held preliminary inquiry into claims by Laura Witheridge that officials mistreated her family Thailand has conducted a preliminary investigation into allegations made by the sister of the murdered backpacker Hannah Witheridge that court officials made insensitive remarks to her family during a year-long investigation and trial. Laura Witheridge said in a lengthy Facebook post on Monday that court officials had asked her family: “Why are you so bothered? Just go home and make another one.†The post was later heavily edited and then removed following media interest. The post also claimed that “the vast majority of the Thai police are corrupt†and suggested that her sister’s killer was still free. A spokesperson for the court of justice said in a statement there was “deep concern†over allegations “implicating that inappropriate remarks were made on the death of Miss Hannah Witheridge by judges and court officials at the trialâ€. “The office of the judiciary has promptly conducted a preliminary investigation,†the spokesperson said. British backpacker murder case that put Thailand on trial “Throughout the trial, neither complaint nor any improper conduct was brought up for an immediate action to be taken ... Moreover, all judges and court officials are consciously aware of the rights of the victim and her family afforded by law,†it said, adding that the Witheridges were entitled to submit a formal complaint. Meanwhile, Thai media reported that the national police chief, Chakthip Chaijinda, had said the police’s legal and foreign affairs units were examining whether Laura Witheridge had broken any laws. Defamation in Thailand is a criminal offence. Hannah Witheridge, 23, from Norfolk, was found on Sairee beach on Koh Tao island alongside 24-year-old David Miller, from Jersey, in September 2014. Witheridge had been raped and bludgeoned to death and Miller had been attacked and left to drown in the surf, Thai police say. The Burmese migrant workers Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were sentenced to death for the crime on 24 December, a move widely condemned by human rights groups who said migrants in Thailand had been used as scapegoats for crimes in the past. The pair initially confessed to the murder but later rescinded their statements, saying they had been tortured by police to admit to the attack. Thai police, who deny any wrongdoing, were also accused by the defence team of mishandling crucial DNA evidence. Laura Witheridge, who did not respond to requests for comment, said in her Facebook post that she had received death threats from people in Thailand. “They defaced photographs of me saying that the killers had only done ‘half the job’,†she said. The Royal Thai police spokesperson Dejnarong Suthicharnbancha told the Guardian this week that Witheridge’s allegations of corruption were presented “without evidence and without fact. If there’s any corruption, it has to be seen on a case-by-case basis.†But, he said, police would be willing to work with Witheridge if she wanted to take up the matter with authorities. http://www.theguardi...nnah-witheridge -

But surely you can go to the address and arrest the people there? Like on CSI ? I joke, judging by the Boys in Brown, past utterances, they are probably finding out what IP address means, about now. And the fact that the IP addresses are likely not in Jurisdictions that fall under Thai Law. -
And on the other side of the coin, here in NZ, most kids get a great education, leave Uni with a degree expecting a high paying job, and have to work as drones anyway. Whist I don't wish to deny anyone an education, society faces problems when everyone is a post graduate and competing for the same few jobs.

http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2016/01/14/police-consider-prosecuting-koh-tao-victims-sister-over-thailand-criticism Police consider prosecuting Koh Tao victim's sister over Thailand criticism By Coconuts Bangkok January 14, 2016 / 17:31 ICT The commissioner of the Royal Thai Police said yesterday the authorities are investigating the Facebook post of Laura Witheridge, sister of Koh Tao murder victim Hannah, in which she slammed Thailand over the “bungled†murder investigation. Chakthip Chaijinda said he had assigned the International Affairs Division to translate Laura's Facebook post to inspect whether it violates any laws. In the lengthy Facebook post on Jan. 10, Laura, whose sister Hannah was brutally murdered on Koh Tao in 2014, called the investigation "bungled" and accused the Thai authorities of using her family for press photo opportunities by lying that they were going to give the family an update on the investigation. She also wrote she had been threatened, chased, and offered bribes by Thais. "What if I told you that I have been sent crime scene photographs? What if I told you that I have been chased in my car? What if I told you that the Thais offered us ‘compensation’? Obviously we were absolutely appalled and declined," she wrote. The post was heavily edited after it was picked up by international media. Laura eventually took down her Facebook post. Chakthip said the investigation was based on forensic evidence and that officials have held many conferences to clarify society’s suspicions over the case. He insisted that the Thai authorities paid importance to the death of foreigners, Daily News reported. -

http://www.khaosodenglish.com/detail.php?newsid=1452766720&typecate=06§ion= Anonymous Releases Court Data as Police Vow to Catch Hackers BANGKOK — Police said today they would go after the hacker collective known as Anonymous after its members took down hundreds of court websites and released sensitive data it claimed to have obtained. Following Wednesday’s massive Anonymous attack in protest of the outcome of the Koh Tao murders trial, police spokesman Dechnarong Suticharnbancha said the Technology Crime Suppression Division would track down the self-described hacktivists for prosecution. He acknowledged police still have no clue where the attacks originated from. Courts spokesman Suebpong Sripongkul said Wednesday that at least 10 IP addresses linked to the attacks from outside the country were identified. Statements posted online to accounts used by members of Anonymous indicated the attacks were part of a campaign to call attention to corruption in Thailand’s justice system after two Myanmar men were found guilty and sentenced to die for the deaths of two Britons on Koh Tao in September 2014. Some sites were accessible while others remained offline Thursday. Suebpong said such attacks would be ineffective. “The Court of Justice would like to say that the computer attack cannot change the judgment, and the lawful verdict issued by the court,†he said. Those participating in Anonymous campaigns are more sympathetic volunteers than “members,†and typically employ sophisticated methods to cover their tracks. It was unclear how police intended to bring them to justice. Data Dump The Blink Hacker Group associated with Anonymous last night leaked a large, 1GB data file said to contain internal information stolen during the attack including personal details about court officials. “We hacked in Thai Justice Net in order to find some of confidential files after police sites attacked,†they wrote “Pages can be restored by any mins...our target is just to take down their Justice Net and get their information.†A brief review of the database found what appears to be genuine records and telephone numbers for personnel and judges. Dechnarong said they believe the hackers were the same who previously brought down a number of police websites on Jan. 4. Junta deputy chairman Pravit Wongsuwan reportedly ordered the Royal Thai Police to bring the perpetrators to justice. Asked this morning whether more money should be budgeted for securing government websites, Pravit said, “Sure.†-
So now they're saying that global warming has prevented sudden early onset ice age They being = researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research near Berlin - published in Nature Excerpt: Global warming caused by fossil fuel emissions is blamed by scientists for intensifying storms, raising sea levels and prolonging droughts. Now there's growing evidence of a positive effect: we may have delayed the next ice age by 100,000 years or more. The conditions necessary for the onset of a new ice age were narrowly missed at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s, researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research near Berlin wrote Wednesday in the journal Nature. Since then, rising emissions of heat-trapping CO2 from burning oil, coal and gas have made the spread of the world's ice sheets even less likely, they said. "This study further confirms what we've suspected for some time, that the carbon dioxide humans have added to the atmosphere will alter the climate of the planet for tens to hundreds of thousands of years, and has cancelled the next ice age," said Andrew Watson, a professor of Earth sciences at the University of Exeter in southwest England who wasn't involved in the research. "Humans now effectively control the climate of the planet." The study reveals new findings on the relationship between insolation, a measure of the Sun's energy reaching the planet, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the spread of ice sheets that characterize an ice age. The researchers in Germany were able to use computer models to replicate the past eight glacial cycles and provide predictions on when the next might occur. The scientists found that even without further output of heat-trapping gases, the next ice age probably wouldn't set in for another 50,000 years. That would make the current so-called interglacial period "unusually long," according to the lead author, Andrey Ganopolski. "However, our study also shows that relatively moderate additional anthropogenic CO2-emissions from burning oil, coal and gas are already sufficient to postpone the next ice age for another 50,000 years," which would mean the next one probably won't start for 100,000 years, he said. http://www.thespec.com/news-story/6233059-the-good-news-on-global-warming-we-ve-delayed-the-next-ice-age/

Anonymous shuts down 297 Thai court websites. Hacker group Anonymous has attacked and taken down hundreds of Thai court websites in retaliation for the Koh Tao murder verdict. The group has threatened to leak information about Thai judiciary members it claims are corrupt, Khaosod English reported. Anonymous said it had taken down 297 websites since last night, including those of Thai Court of Justice and the Appeal Court, in protest against the conviction of two Myanmar migrant workers, found guilty last month of the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge and of the murder of David Miller. More at : http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2016/01/13/anonymous-shuts-down-297-thai-court-websites I like this bit: "Thai police said in response they would file a complaint against the hackers." Who with? Given the gender imbalance, I hope you like Chinese men. Not sure prices will go up though. The Japanese tourists have had a positive effect on prices, but I'd figure that LT might return to affordable levels after a few years of Chinese Tourism in the fleshpots -
