Secret "Best of" Thai Food

Where can you get the best guaytee-oh ruah? What city has the absolute best duck? What specialties have you encountered in various parts of Thailand?

We have the favorite Thai food thread and have had many restaurant recommendations but we haven't had a thread on towns or areas that are known to have the best of a specific dish or item.

As an example many board members have posted about having traveled to Nakhon Pathom to view the giant chedi. Were you aware that Nakhon Pathom is also considered to be the source of the best khao moo daeng in Thailand? I tried it at one of the many restaurants lining the road from the train station to the chedi and WOW, it was great. How did I know about this? It's not in any tour book I've seen. I was told by several Thais in the US before my last visit when I discussed wanting to see the chedi.

Besides BKK, what other areas do you know of that have a specialty that may not be widely known by non-Thais?

Khao moo daeng, by the way for those who have never had it, is often eaten for breakfast. It consists of slices of roast pork (the one with the red coating hence the moo daeng) on top of rice served with fresh cilantro, scallions, and one or more sauces. I used to eat it for breakfast in Phuket and always liked it but was blown away by the flavor of the dish in Nakhon Pathom.

I've heard the other food there is very ordinary so had I not known about the khao moo daeng I might have really missed out.

Nakhon Pathom-

Khao moo daeng

Phuket -

Pineapples - small round and very sweet. Considered to be the best in Thailand

Gaeng Thai Pla - Very spicy fish stew usually served with khanom jiin noodles and lots of veggies.

I agree with you about sapparot from Phuket, the best ones in Thailand.

A other speciality from Nakhon Pathom is khao lam I was told many time by Thai people that the best khao lam was in Nakhon Pathom I was there in March and I must say that I agree with them.

Next time I go to Nakhon Pathom I will surely taste the moo daeng because I like it in soup (bamee nam moo daeng).

I also like to know where to find the best lard gai or moo or anything, a favorite of me, never eat a bad one but some are better than other.

For a good phat Thai avoid the one already cook at the foodstall they only re-heat it, a good phat Thai is made fresh in front of you.

Forgot about the Chiang Mai sausage the you can find almost everywhere in Thailand, the best one are in Chiang Mai.

The Isaan grill chicken is very good but there is also a place in Chiang Mai call Kai Yang Isaan (SP Chicken) not many farang at this restaurant, the Isaan grill chicken is one of the best I taste in Thailand, they also do take-out and when eating there at night I saw a non stopping flow of Thai coming for take-out. A few door near the Kai Yang Isaan there is a noodle shop you can't miss it because you will see non stopping flow of Thai people going there for take-out, the bammee nam moo daeng with won tong is fabulous.

At these 2 places you don't see lot of farang but you will notice that they are very happy to welcome you and they will make averything possible to please you, once you go to these 2 places I am sure you will go back again. Prices are dirt cheap at those 2.

Khao Lam is made of sticky rice (red o white), coconut milk, a little sugar and black beans cook in a bambou.

Ahh, yeah I've had it but never very good varieties and often somewhat stale. I'll have to try this on my next trip there now that I know what to call it.

Thanks

Oup! I forgot the location of Kai Yang Isaan (SP Chicken) and the noodle shop, they are at the corner of Thanon Moon Muang and Thanon Si Phum this is the road that make a square around the Chiang Mai old city, it's at the north east corner.

I think TAT has a book specialising in this regards.

At this moment I can think of :

Kow Lam (rice in bamboo stick) mentioned earlier. The best and original is from Nong Mon (˹çù) in Chonburi province. It is on the way to Pattaya, you can't miss it. The Nong Mom market is on the Sukumvit road. You can see LOTS of Kow Lam displayed.

Roasted Pork ËÃÙÂèÒ§ Got to be from Trang province.

Planin Tord (Fried Nilfish) »ÅÒ¹Ôŷô The best is from Petchaboon province.

Dry shreadded pork (Moo Yong) ËÃÙËÂç from Udonthani.

Kanom Salee ¢¹ÃÊÒÅÕè It's a dessert though - just like spunge cake. It is best from Supan buri. Supan also have lots of great freshwater fish.

khanom mo kaeng ¢¹ÃËÃéÃᡧ It is similar to pudding, made of crushed steamed mong bean, egg, cocount milk and sugar which is, after well mixed, baked under the charcoal fire. You should get it from Petchaburi.

Any dogs dishes Got to be from Sakon nakorn.:-)

Actually, the best food is the food which comprises of local ingrediants unique from anywhere else. Provinces along the rivers offer variety of different freshwater fish eg. Karnchanaburi, Rachaburi, etc.

Actually, you can check that out from TAT website. click here

there are a lot of large shops along phetkasem road (main road to south thailand) in petburi province. mae kim lui, mae kim lang and mae kim lay, each with several branches. they sell mor kaeng and other kanoms; on sunday afternoons there is a certain traffic chaos around those shops.
