REUTERS:

UK police investigate soccer-linked rape claim

London

October 1, 2003 - 12:04AM

British police confirmed yesterday they were investigating a teenage girl's allegation of rape which newspapers have blamed on eight professional soccer players.

"Detectives from Westminster's Sapphire Unit are carrying out an investigation following the receipt of an allegation of rape and sexual assault from a 17-year-old female," police said in a statement.

"The female made the allegation in person at a central London police station on September 27, 2003," they added.

"There have been no arrests."

Newspapers have reported that the girl consented to sex with one Premier League player at a London hotel over the weekend, but seven other players from different teams joined in against her wishes.

The players have not been named, but are said to include "at least one international and several other household names", the papers said.

Black and White?.

only one team comes to mind and mentioned before, but as someone said, why would they still be in town over 24 hours later?........unless they had been given the weekend off.

i hear one of the players involved has taken out a court injunction to prevent his name being leaked to the public.

has he something to hide?.

but it brings up the old question about people being identified.

in the UK people accused of sex crimes seem to be named in public when they are charged(but more often than not before they are charged).

this has caused a furore, saying that no-one should be named unless they are found guilty.

seems strange that these players have not been named yet.

are they a special case because of who they are?.

after all others have been named time after time.

......................................................................

I don't think anyone has been charged yet, and from what I read they/him will be identified later this week when/if there is any charge.

Cheers!

EXCLUSIVE

Girl's story of

Room 316 'attack'

Allegations ... girl claims soccer

stars attacked her in hotel room

By NICK PARKER, KATHRYN LISTER

and MIKE SULLIVAN

THE 17-year-old girl who says she was gang-raped by Premiership soccer stars has claimed they LAUGHED as they took turns to attack her.

The bright, Catholic school sixth-former has shown her family bruises which she claims prove she was held down during the alleged sex ordeal.

The Sun can reveal she admitted to relatives that she went to London?s Grosvenor House Hotel last Friday night and agreed to go to bed with a footballer.

She alleges that while they were having sex in Room 316 of the five-star hotel, seven other players walked in on them and the gang assault took place.

She told her family she recognised only one of the seven ? because he plays for the club she supports ? and that he humiliated her verbally as he allegedly forced himself on her.

A source close to the family said yesterday: ?She is still in shock and can?t stop shaking whenever she talks about it.

?She has admitted that she consented to sex with one of the players, but says she was horrified when the rest came in.

?She claims she was forcibly raped by three or four of them on the bed. One was allegedly holding her down by the arms, calling her a s**g. It left her degraded and utterly humiliated.?

Sign ... number on hotel door

Details of the girl?s claims emerged yesterday as the allegations ? first revealed by The Sun ? continued to be probed by Scotland Yard?s Operation Sapphire specialist sex offences unit.

Four plain-clothed detectives guarded Room 316 as workmen changed the locks.

The officers then sealed the door with tape. Dozens of items had been removed for further forensic tests ? including bed sheets, towels and drinking glasses.

It is understood the room was booked by a Premiership player who did not stay in it and has provided witnesses and evidence which prove he could not possibly have been there at the time.

He has denied all involvement. Cops, whose investigation is at an early stage, also took a mountain of refuse from the hotel.

One senior source said: ?We are going through everything with a fine-toothed comb and are analysing every bit of rubbish left behind by the guests.

?The refuse will be taken to a lab where experts will look for anything which could corroborate the girl?s story. We are treating this with the utmost seriousness.?

The girl gave a full statement to cops about her alleged ordeal after reporting it at Marylebone Police Station over the weekend.

In conversations with family members, she said she went with a girlfriend to a makeover party in the West End prior to her first meeting with the stars.

She and her chum are said to have looked much older than their years when they went out on the town afterwards.

The alleged victim ? a tall, slim part-time model with shoulder-length brown hair ? met one of the players at the Purple Bar in London?s Sanderson Hotel.

The teenager told relatives the athletic star chatted her up before she agreed to go with him to the Grosvenor House.

Witnesses told The Sun footballers were seen chatting with two girls in the hotel?s Red Bar.

The girl claims she drank only Coke throughout the evening and was sober when she agreed to go to the star?s room.

Room ... plush accommodation at 5-star hotel

But as the pair had sex, she claims she fell victim to the gang rape.

The source said: ?She alleges they were all over her like animals.

?She said she walked out of the room without saying a word when it was over, with the players? laughter ringing in her ears.

?She got the lift down and called herself a taxi home.?

According to the source, the girl at first felt unable to tell her mother her shocking story.

But she tearfully poured out details of the alleged attack to her older sister and went to police the following day.

The family source said: ?Her dad wanted to kill the players responsible and it was made worse by the fact some of them played for his favourite team.

?His daughter only turned 17 recently. He keeps saying, ?How can they do this to my girl???

The girl, who has been tested routinely for HIV and date rape drugs, claims two of the eight players were from one Premiership club, with six from another.

Her pal, who is understood to have stayed with the stars at the hotel bar when the alleged victim went upstairs, could also be crucial to the investigation.

She is said to be a keen football fan who could identify all the players she met.

Briefs battle

Net gossip

By WILL BARKER

LAWYERS yesterday leapt into action to stamp on emails linking a string of Premiership footballers with the alleged hotel gang-rape.

One email was allegedly traced to an employee of a large company. He has been put on notice while the claim is investigated.

And the legal eagles threaten to sue anyone else circulating such emails ? in a crackdown on wild internet gossip about the case.

Dozens of players have been linked to the scandal on the Net ? many entirely unconnected with the night of the alleged attack.

The lawyers have warned they will go to the High Court in the first known case of its kind to beat web gossip.

They believe the only other similar case was when David Beckham took action against the Popbitch site which contained an untrue rumour about the England skipper.

Last night experts were shocked that the players? lawyers were picking on one emailer rather than a website.

Internet lawyer Adam Glass said: ?It?s a highly unusual action. I?ve never heard of lawyers concentrating on one individual.

?They?re using one unfortunate person as an example to scare others into stemming the spread. It will be very interesting under what terms they?re taking the action.?

Andrew Craig, deputy editor of internet mag Web User, said: ?This is unprecedented.?

Plush ... Grosvenor

House Hotel

By KATHRYN LISTER

A TOP soccer chairman was in the bar of the Grosvenor House Hotel as the players at the centre of the gang rape allegations downed drinks.

Simon Jordan, boss of Crystal Palace in Division One, pointed out the stars to the Red Bar staff, naming them and their clubs.

Wealthy Jordan, who keeps a permanent suite at the hotel, was tight-lipped yesterday when asked about the incident.

He said: ?I can?t comment on this point, I?m sorry.?

When asked if he was in the bar over the weekend, he said: ?I can?t comment.?

Luxury ... one

of hotel's bedrooms

He was then asked if he was saying that he had NOT been in the bar.

Jordan said: ?No, I?m not saying that, I just can?t comment.?

There is no suggestion that Jordan is linked to the allegations.

Staff said he was drinking at the bar when the players came in.

One said he saw two girls in the group ? which was ?loud and drinking heavily?.

will the Players get off with any charges because she has accepted some sort of payment for her story(?) before charges have been applied?.

One item that caught my eye was that NUFC had to make a Stock Exchange announcement denying that SBR had resigned over "poor results" ..

However punters seem unconvinced and he was backed yesterday from 16s down to 3/1 to be the next manager to leave his post.

It will be interesting to see what team they put out on Saturday, and by a stroke of luck its on the telly.

Cheers

K.
