elef
Hi oldtimer, "Sorry, as this bird flu business is such a serious matter of vital concern to all folk living in, or planning on visiting, the Kingdom I believe that it should be discussed in the upfront GENERAL forum." 2 bird flu threads started in Health. One more thread started in GD with the alarming news that the bird flu reached Bangkok. Contrary to our principles I let that thread stay in GD as long as it was real fresh. We have different forums, but many posters want to post in GD. So we mods move threads from GD to the correct forums. However a thread can also be moved opposite way if of big importance! This is of course decided finally by KS. If posters should decide the correct forum themselves we soon would have almost everything in GD and could close many forums! An other principle is that we don't allow parallel threads active same time and especially not in different forums. The reason for that is so obvious that I don't comment it further! elef Mod GD
Guest
Hi Oldtimer: Did you check the date when the first post was made? At that time the government was claiming that there was no bird flu. Hence the question mark, which was questioning that position. Some people knew better. I could agree with you that this deals with more than just health, i.e. economy, business, travel, food, shopping. It was originally posted in GD. By this time it probably doesn't matter. ThaiHome
Sent yesterday by American Citizen Services - Bangkok: AVIAN FLU FACT SHEET US Department of State January 29, 2004 ------------------------ This Fact Sheet alerts Americans to the rapid spread of the H5N1 Avian flu strain across Asia. A number of countries have reported incidences of Avian flu, commonly referred to as bird flu. Thailand and Vietnam have reported several bird-human transmissions of the Avian flu thought to have been caused by individuals' contact with infected poultry populations. Although several deaths from the Avian flu have been reported, there has been no known human-human transmission of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are concerned about the potential for human-human transmission of this highly pathogenic flu strain. At this time, CDC and the WHO have not issued any travel alerts or advisories for Avian flu-infected areas. CDC advises travelers to countries in Asia with documented H5N1 outbreaks to avoid poultry farms, contact with animals in live food markets and any surfaces that appear to be contaminated with feces from poultry or other animals. The WHO does not at present conclude that any processed poultry products (whole refrigerated or frozen carcasses and products derived from these) and eggs in or arriving from areas currently experiencing outbreaks of avian influenza H5N1 in poultry pose a risk to public health. The WHO continuously emphasizes the importance of good hygiene practices during handling, including hand washing, prevention of cross-contamination and thorough cooking of poultry products. Americans who are planning travel to a country with an incidence of the virus or who are concerned about the Avian flu are advised to monitor the CDC and the WHO web sites, http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/index.htm and http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/en/, for the latest information. BrownFox77
A sorry sight seen: Walking on Soi 23 this afternoon near where all the food venders were clustered right there on the sidewalk was a dead pigeon with all sorts of flies and knats feeding off it and buzzing around the carcus. Everyone just walked on by... Yesterday's Nation said they planned to slaughter all the Pigeons in Bangkok, I wonder if they may be a bit too late... I was actually a bit worried as I walking downwind of the dead pigeon.
