Torneyboy
Do Thais Get Embarrassed about their names in Falangland? Have two examples...both from today. First..my wife has just started an English course...the class was asked to tell each other the country of origin and hobbies etc. The class has five thai many..Japanese/Vietnamese/Chinese...among others. The teacher (from south africa) wrote my wifes name on the board....23 letters. My wife was ..a bit upset about this ..students have also shortened her first name and added an ee sound at the end..she hates this The other is a thai guy (student living with us for 6 months) just 20 years old..has a strange nic name....the teacher has asked him to change his name ...well at least a name she can cope with. He also is a bit upset ..he called home to his mom and dad tonight to talk about it. He is thinking of a western name..to make things easy in the classroom. I have not come across this before..we have had other students stay with us and no problems.
BelgianBoy
Thai people should be proud of their names, and others should not be shortsided and just accept them ! Cheers !
Straycat
I don't know...but I do know that my GF:s nick name does not come out very good in my native language (obscene meaning!). Her real name is short enough and not particularly strange though so it works out well in the end.
Zaad
Thai people should be proud of their names, and others should not be shortsided and just accept them ! Exactly. Funny teacher you got there, TB. Writing names on the whiteboard and all...damn that's kindergarten stuff.
Guest
My take on it is that thai nicknames don't "play" too well here in usa: Moo porn eat meow. tip ow turd ( had to call soneone that and it was tough not to crack up for the first few days) tik ping ( hard not to follow up with pong) a o wow ow and so on I'm sure there are lots of others
Guest lazyphil
When I got my mrs her passport made up at Laksi the tg doing it insisted her name was spelt quite different to how she spells it/sounds--ends in Porn like lots of Thai names yet she spelt in Phon aswell as other changes--now on every official docu its spelt a most odd way--she pissed me off with her all knowing attitude. Hi Wife has two sisters...put all three passports on the table..three different spellings of the family name :: The younger one has cut hers in half..for mail and that type of thing.(not legal stuff). Cheers ! Yes i agree ..BB Zaad Just her name on the Blackboard I guess was the longest so she wanted to show the class...my wife is very nice and just smiled...deep down was upset (not understand) why she was singled out. Also Zaad..they were treated like kids on the first day...given small test to see what they can do and say in english One Thai girl got asked to leave and go to level one class...been here 8 years..can't write her name and address in English. My wife later in formed me she ""used to work bar"" :: Married to falang and three kids. The homework is going to be difficult without me almost filling in the blanks on the sheets. Oh well she will pass in the end.
gobbledonk
Hi TB, I wouldnt worry - you know how ignorant many of our fellow Aussies are. I spent 10 minutes down at my travel agent explaining that my IG only has a single name - no 'last name'. Finally, exasperated, I said 'Just like Suharto !' to blank looks. They had never heard of one of the single most influential figures in modern Asian history. Freaking pathetic. Their booking system demanded two names, despite the fact that her passport has only one. She now has an identical first and last name - hilarious stuff.
