I think that was a stupid request P127 - this board is not about others relieving stuff about ourself against our wish.

Its up to SLH to tell the story, if he wants.

Cheers!

True but Sileakhunt has been muzzled. And this Portugal thing (if it's true) has come as a total surprise to me. Personally I thought there was some hope for him. He was/is trying to put his soccer hooligan past behind him, I thought, and I understood he is even busy writing a book! Perhaps it will contain a full confession and one day we will welcome a truly repentant Sileakhunt back to the fold. Amen. :)

here is some more info on the arrests...

Very erudite and apposite.

Some of the football supporter bars in Pattaya are a right load of old toss. Gormless plonkers in footie strips staring at each other rather than looking at totty. Many of the bars have a rather stupid slogan on the wall, especially considering that the bar owners and many of the customers live or are regular Thailand visitors, it goes "Born in England, Live in England, Die in England." (Oh, marvellous that means your just like 60 million other people then but if it makes you feel special print a fucking tee-shirt. )

Having said that, there does seem to be a certain honour amongst hooligans to an extent in that they normally only target other firms and not your average citizen. About a year ago a large firm got off at my local suburban station rather than get off a couple of stops later at the main terminus. They were swarming along the street and across side roads like locusts, all wearing very similar clothes. Obviously they did this to avoid meeting the old bill and being escorted to the ground and so they could have a pint and a ruck with another firm. They were remarkably well behaved amongst the locals although they could well have caused a riot.

Anyway, poor old matey boy. If he has been banged up for 6 months then he won't be posting here for a while, unless they have internet access in the nick.

As far as Americans are concerned, it is totally beyond our comprehension, since it is rooted in two subcultures we don't understand, football supporters first, and hooligans, second.

Joking, right? Ever seen the rioting crowds after some of the playoffs in the States? Cars burning, people ripping away pieces of the stadium/stand etc.

Merkins can be the same as people elsewhere.

Hope that does not cross the political line.

Sorry to hear about SLK, never took him as a hooligan. His recent rip report should be framed on the wall at Gullibles. Look forward to reading his book one day.

Carew, your excellent post could be used as an editorial on the subject.

Agree with FlyPap that segregated seating only fuels the fire. It's amazing how big little Johnnie can grow with all his mates around him. The problem is hardly limited to England, though. Turkey, Italy, Germany and Holland are also well represented. The English authorities seem to be on top of it at home with ID, cameras, etc., but due to pride or arrogance, their neighbors sometimes foolishly choose to go it alone. France World Cup was a classic example.

Another huge factor is the nature of the game -- non contact (supposedly) and low scoring. A team could have 20 chances on goal to their opponent's zero, hit the bar twice, denied three penalties but in the 89th minute an opponent dives and the ref points to the spot, 1-0, game over, thanks for coming.

The frustrated fan has few chances to release tension.

Compare it to rugby -- full-on contact, more scoring, fans interspersed, no shortage of alcohol, very rarely trouble.

this board is not about others relieving stuff about ourself against our wish.

The board rules say "Posting information which could lead to the identification of individuals is forbidden." Since names are available through the news media, I would say this thread topic is in violation of that rule. If I were a moddie, I'd delete it.

can someone tell us more about SLH? Some of you englisg guys have met him. Was he a perfect example of hooligan, routinely, or could he have been in the wrong crowd and on the piss that night?

I can!I had a missed call from him 24hrs ago and it was his from his home number in the UK::

Compared to some other European clubs,English footy hooligans are a load of poofs. The Red Star Belgrade firm carry firearms :( !

I like your Portuguese flag avitar Zaad!I've been wearing my Portugal shirt and my England trakkie bottoms during Euro.I hope I don't get a double kicking!

Sileakheat had some writing talent so he didn't fit into a hooligan stereotype.

I can't help feeling that half this 'football hooligan' trouble is simply European continent-English culture clash, with Europeans not used to the concept of groups of men getting drunk, becoming obnoxious and looking for trouble, which is what happens in English town centres every weekend anyway. Other nationalities may channel their aggressions other ways, in different areas even, but everyone has them. I don't notice these hooligans kniving people all the time , as happens with Italian or Turkish hooligans quite often. (Nor do they start world wars, which is another Europeans nation's young men's way of having aggressive fun...::)

I was watching on TV the buildup to the England V France match. They showed one of the bars in portugal which APPEARED to aiming for the English supporters.

The Blackboard announcing the game on TV in the Bar read:-

ENG-ERRRR-LAAAND

V

THE FROGS

Very little to add really.

Apart from pointing out that despite me being born in 1966 long after WWII - I still somehow managed to grow up on old Black and White WWII movies (I suspect it was not deliberate policy to brainwash us in the 1970's with movies about plucky Brits bashing johnny foreigner - it was more that they were cheap TV)

BTW at the moment on BBC2 they are showing a re-run of "Das Boot" (Spelling?) - Up Periscope! :D

Possibly Football hooliganism is caused by repressed homosexuality.

Europeans not used to the concept of groups of men getting drunk, becoming obnoxious and looking for trouble

While that is something of a generalisation, I dont know that they *should* have to 'get used' to the concept. If the England supporters (or any other group, to be fair) behaved the same way in Oz during last years Rugby World Cup, they would have found our legal system to be a pretty remorseless adversary. To their credit, the Barmy Army we get downunder for the cricket and Rugby seem to be a pretty good bunch of lads and lassies.

I dont know what happened in SLH's case, but I can only go by what I see in the media, and the England soccer fans dont do themselves any favours. Why dont they just have their passports confiscated if this cycle is going to keep repeating itself ? I suspect the answer lies in the fact that the towns which host such events make a *lot* of money from them, even when you subtract the cost of broken windows and torched cars.
