I think it's best to explain the rss thingy without going into technical details. RSS feeds enable you to keep up to date with certain websited without actually having to visit these sites. Everytime the site is updated, rss feeds enable you to see what actually has been added.

I like to keep up to date with a couple of news sites and everytime they add new headlines, I get them in my feedreader. If the headlines hold something of interest, I just read that artice. It keeps you from visiting websites again and again while nothing worthwile has been added. It helps you to make the most of your time online.

Another interesting use of rss feeds is that it makes it possible to trackk sites like ebay and whether they have some items up for sale that you're interested in. If you want a rare copy of Vince Mendoza's Start Here, you could have an rss feedreader keep track of this item on Ebay.

There's also the possibility to follow additions to some blogs, although it is off course up to the blogger if he adds an rss feed to his blog.

Cheers,
