Hi jack, Sorry, but I think Goodfellas is one of the most boring, meaningless, irrelevant films I have ever seen. I don't find the antics of mafia lowlifes particularly entertaining. At least Godfather had some drama, even if it also was about bottom of the heap deadbeats. In both cases, I could only understand about half of what was said because they were speaking American, which didn't help. Khwai
Guest
'"Sorry, but I think Goodfellas is one of the most boring, meaningless, irrelevant films I have ever seen." I suspect what U just wrote should be a deadly sin in any decent religion; watch out for random jihadist out near your amphiteater. Though shall not talk shit about Pesci the Great. Donny Brasco is another fantastic mafia movie, wonder wether u found it boring as well.
soongmak
Casino better than Goodfellas? Surely you jest... No, I mean it. I know that Goodfellas is rated more highly by the critics, probably because of the great similarity between the movies. In my book, they are both great. After several viewings though I keep coming back to Casino more often, simply because the great Las Vegas setting, the seventies decor, music and costumes. I like how this movie explains the workings of Vegas before it became Disneyland. Also, the whole sequence in Goodfellas where Ray Liotta drives his car around, moving the drugs around while being followed by a helicopter drags down the feel and the pace of the movie. JMHO off course!
Guest
Now I just need to see those both again. Just light some candles for Scorsese... one great example of how to do very interesting but comercial movies!
Old Hippie
For Mafia ("I say there is no such thing, it is an ethnic stereotype, and I resent it!" ) Movie I like the best was probably God Father 1+2...Part 3 was good, but sort of sucked compared the other movies mentioned here. Still, I think the majority of girls who find a way out, do it by marrying good with a farang, or living with him. Way too many guys here on NP are in that situation, and not being schemed upon the least, as they are not very rich. Yeah, the girls are totally unpredictable. The worst though is when a guy fills a girl's head about love, stop work, take care and all that shit. Then they just get bored and dump the girl. Unless a permanent barfine has been paid or adequate notice given, she ain't coming back to work for me or any of my friends. I lost a stunning and highly succesful girl to a 2nd timer wanker who came for 2 months. 3rd night she didn't show, nor the 4th. Said she had finished. 3 weeks later she is "unemployed" as the guy found a new piece of candy. To this day, if I see him, I will break his fucking legs. If you are that angry about the guy fucking her head up, why not give her her job back? Why ruin her chances of working for you, your friends etc? Why try to ruin her even more? If she was a good employee, and you made money off her ass, why not take her back? Wait a minute, Aren't you the guy who said he didn't let his girls go with a customer long time? the customer had to come to your bar daily and have a drink and pay the fine? I seem to recall you saying that...and why should a girl have to pay you to quit? If she was a good earner, take her back, makes good business sense. If she was a slacker, you'd cut her lose anyway, so let her go...
Guest
Goodfellas was great with the setting in Brooklyn NY, my true home. Think of the characters, they had all the character types nailed. That along with this being a somewhat true story makes for one of the best movies ever made. From Maury to "Stacks" to Pauly. Excellently acted and all cast members fit like a glove. They were going to throw the mailman in the pizza oven for sending absence letters home from school! "Thats him, thats the guy". And when Tommy killed Spider and Jimmy says, "Im kiddin wit you and you fucking kill the guy?" and Joe Pesce answers "Whaddaya want I am a good shot..." (had to see movie to understand) Fucking classic. Gonna watch it next time its on... Oneye
Zorro
I like both Goodfellas and Casino but would give the slight edge to Casino. Donny Brasco is also great. What about Millers Crossing that is a great old style gangster movie?
pattaya127
Part 3 was good, but sort of sucked compared the other movies mentioned here. ----------------------------------- interesting and different opinions on all these movies, here. I actually thought GodF 3 was the most seminal of them all. Coppola, even more than in the first 2, left the anecdotal, the "place in time" setting, to attain the archetypal pathos of a greek tragedy. That hit me when I saw how he staged the Don's daughter being killed at the end. And it takes place on the straircase of a opera house after a performance, and opera is greek tragedy in our modern time. IMO, this is how he made his point that after 1000s of years, men are not masters of their destiny, even as you killed a pope to alter history. Even "Apocalypse Now", which registered on one level only because of the strong tie to the recent V. war in everyone's conscience, looks like a costumed serenade happening on the side of life, next to the loss of one's own blood for having assumed your given role in society against your inner calling (the stuff of any greek, ie. classical tragedy), directed as Coppola did. IMO.
