Dengue fever

I got dengue fever myself some years ago after coming back home from Polynesia.

Every bone and muscle in the body ached for one week - which is the normal.

Consulting a specialist doctor who just prescribed paracetamol.

But you never get immunity and it's no risk for death for grown-ups (ok, almost at least - if you can die from a cold you can die from dengue fever).

The 5 % risk of death comes from children.

Deet is the short name for
Diethyl Toluamide
it is considered by many to be the most effective insect repellant available. Boots the Chemist do a reasonable priced range which contains 20% Deet.

I see you are in Ireland, if you can get "Lifesystems" products there, they do a non-aerosol pump dispenser of 95% Deet. It's called "Lifesystems Expedition 100 Insect Repellant". I use this sprayed onto a hat and it does the trick.

Mosquitos are more active at night especially just as the sun goes down. Bad news is that Dengue fever is carried by a day flying variety. So if they trouble you, and some people seem to
attract
them more than others, use some form of repellant daytime too.

I hope this is the right way to reply. I think that you might like to know that I have noticed that some Millett stores in England are selling products with a very high DEET content As much as 100% in so cases. With the higher content they recommend that it is sprayed directly on to a wristband I think I have read that high concentrations of DEET are very effective. Jirve

Well, since one or two of you seem to know a lot about this disease, let me ask--I got bit up in Chon Buri (Sri Racha) last night. How many days will it be before I know if I'm f***'d up or not? Sounds like a fun malady to endure on a transpacific flight in the economy section. frown.gif" border="0

Avoid wearing the color blue as mosquitoes are attracted to this color.

As far as repelents go I would reccomend using a product called Skin So Soft by Avon Cosmetics. It does not contain any chemicals that can cause skin problems and who would want to cover ther themselves with chemicals that kill something!!!!! And besides that you'll smell good and look good.

Hi all:

I have been doing a bit of research on the repelant issue. It seems that in order for deet to work it must be applied directly to the skin. I seems that body heat activates it. Also concetrations greater than %35 are sometimes less effctive. There are also some time released deet products out there that can last up to 24 hours. There are products that contain something called permithian (sp) These will work on fabric only, not the skin. You can treat things like pants or socks or shirts. The protection will last though several washing depending on how you apply it to the fabric. I dont have the web sites at hand, but I will post them when I find them. Oh for the record I have a friend who had malaria. He got it in Africa. He forgot to apply deet under his watch band, and he woke up with a ton of bites right along his watch band.
