The Muslims do that 45 day (or so) fasting period toward the end of the year...not sure of the exact name.

Is there a chance that the fighting stops during that time, making it safer for her if she would go at that time?

Of course, can she go at that time?

Just an idea.

As others said, I doubt they'll ever stop until they reach their goal(s), whatever those may be

As for her time.. supposedly next year, Sep. 2007, unless they change their policy and/or are in urgent need of personnel as there is no choosing of dates. You go when they tell you to go.

Her pregancy of course was the exception to this. So the original date of Sep 2005 became Sep 2006. But she can't go this year because she's still enjoying her maternity leave (1 year - 6 months paid - 6 unpaid) which brings us to Sep 2007.

They've been throwing rocks at each other down South for more than twenty years. I remember an armed military escort from one checkpoint to another on a bus trip from Haadyai to Surat Thani (I was going to Samui) all those years ago. No airport back then.

My wife gets sent there every year for a couple of days on official business. I have grown kids too.

Another friend's son (in the military) is being sent there for six months. He gets brownie points for going.

She joined the ARMY. If she wanted a safe job, she should have gone to practice dentistry at a local hospital.

Fair enough, you've got a newborn. Did I read a previous post correctly that says she's on maternity leave till the end of the year or more (5 months ++)?!

Not going (if assigned) is a big loss of face and will lead to being passed over for promotions/ positions etc in the future. It will also be next to impossible to get another government-related job if she does resign.

My two baht worth...

THanks for the info SD, a cooling down period surely would be very welcome (sounds kinda selfish though, but I'm sure you know what I mean)

VK,

Did I read a previous post correctly that says she's on maternity leave till the end of the year or more (5 months ++)?!

Yep, I believe it was 3 months full pay, 3 months 50% or so, and another 6 months no pay.

Not going (if assigned) is a big loss of face and will lead to being passed over for promotions/ positions etc in the future. It will also be next to impossible to get another government-related job if she does resign.

Not going means her resignation in this case, so that rules out the future promotions part.

She knows the position she's in, my take on it, the risks involved as well as the consequences for not going, and at the end of the day it's her call.

RF,

We had discussed a similar situation before. As

Soongmak said, nobody wants to see a loved going to war or working in risky areas which are the source of daily bloody news stories.

It comes with the job and we are both aware of that.

This kid is litterally our party-pooper so to speak :smirk:
