khunsanuk
Hi, It's very common. I use it with my wife, her friends and the girls in the office as well. Sanuk!
Flashermac
Rising tone? That's what I hear.
Pescator
Rather a high tone when used at the end of a sentense. à ¸?à ¹?à ¸° Used as an affirmative Yes: à ¸?à ¹?à ¸°, short falling tone. Using Ja with a rising tone and particularly combined with a long vowel sound would suggest you are being flirtatous or teasing. cheers hn
jitagawn
I always thought it was a soft sweet version of KHA... I usually hear women use it. You know like what OH's partner says to him... :smirk: Just kidding...
khunsanuk
Hi, "Rising tone? That's what I hear." Sorry, I have absolutely no clue about tones. I tend to use the right ones in a conversation, but only because I mimick. Sanuk!

Pescator
I guess you are handsome too mutt According to the spelling it should be short, but I also hear it pronounced in several ways. cheers hua nguu
Free2Fly
Fancy that, I was going to ask a very similar question regarding the 'ja' word. At the end of a surprise email from a Bkk girl (whom I had flirted with on my last trip over Xmas) she wrote 'Sawatdee Ja', preceeding her name, rather than 'Sawatdee Ka'. Hehe... perhaps this 'ja girl' is emailing us both coss? She doesn't work in hospitality does she?
Coss
No, mine's in Laos. And as it happens, I met a Laos girl here in middle earth on Saturday. She tells me the Ja is not used in Laos and that if a Laotian uses Ja, it is as phreako notes above; "it's an affectation of "sophistication" to throw Thai words into your speech." Cheers Coss
