38 blinking cartoon signs shut down Boston

Baez was always full of herself. She came to my university urging students not to pay their phone bills, since "part of the money went to support the war". Huh? Oh, yeah ... she eventually quietly paid her own phone bill. But at least she spoke out when Hanoi invaded Cambodia. Jane asked her why she had changed sides, and Joanie replied: "I was never on Hanoi's side. I wanted the war to stop -- ALL WARS."

Jane Fangu spoke out against any aid to South VN, including economic and humanitarian. She also publicly thanked the Soviet Union and the PRC for their help to NVN in trying to "liberate" the South from the southerners. It wasn't until years later that she decided to remake herself as "anti-VN War". F*ck her. She's as phony as Joanie.

I am not a fan of Jane .. never have been.

never found her or her ideology attractive in any way.

1st: the war was a war against colonialism.. initially french colonialism.

& the '60s SV government was a bought, paid for & directed by western colonialist.

In order for the western colonialist to be removed from SE Asia the NV had to displace the corrupt colonial government in SV

2nd: 2 sides to choose from: colonialist or fighters of colonialist.

one could not support SV without supporting colonialism

Vietnam has come a long way in 40 years without the help of the west .. in fact in spite of the west & it's embargo.

:topic:

funny that a collector of pornography & supporter dominant western capitalism would caste stones at an obvious capitalist ( but reputed communist) free market seller of porn

:yeahthat::stirthepo

Joan's achepello rendition of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" is one of the most beautiful examples of how the human voice can sound.

:bangit:

Not sure the entire west embargoed them? The USa did for what 20 some odd years, had limited relations, now have full relations I think? Not sure. Oddly, didn't France have relations with them before we did? Not sure how prosperhous Vietnam is now, but it is getting there. I am tentitively planning a trip there in May.

I worked with a fellow from Dalat, VN ... too young to remember the war. He has a PhD in Engineering, but told me he hates to work in his homeland. The communist government still follows Marxist Leninist ideology and will not allow him to put into practice the latest technology that he studied. Thus he was working in Thailand.

<< 2nd: 2 sides to choose from: colonialist or fighters of colonialist. >>

Why did the US have to get involved at all? Because it was seen as part of the Cold War. In retrospect, it would have been better if the US had stayed completely out of it. But hindsight is always better than foresight.

<< one could not support SV without supporting colonialism >>

Thus by definition one could not support the North without supporting communism.

My problem with Jane Fonda is that she was one thing during the war (pro-Hanoi), but now claims to have been a pacifist supporter of neither side. And that is a lie.

p.s. Phil, it was the Brits who went into Vietnam after the Japanese surrender and held it until the Froggies returned. There were some wild battles that saw the Brits and their former Japanese enemies fighting shoulder to shoulder against the Viet Minh.

So all's well that ends well. Boston even showed a small profit.

Broadcaster to pay $2M in bomb scare

BOSTON - Turner Broadcasting Systems and Interference Inc. have agreed to pay $2 million for a Cartoon Network advertising campaign that caused a widespread bomb scare, the attorney general said Monday.

The agreement with several state and local agencies resolves any potential civil or criminal claims against the companies, said Attorney General Martha Coakley.

More than three dozen blinking electronic signs with a boxy cartoon character giving an obscene hand gesture were found Wednesday in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. The signs, part of a publicity campaign for Cartoon Network's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," also appeared in nine other big U.S. cities in recent weeks, with little interest.

But in Boston, bomb squads responded to reports of the devices in a subway station, on bridges and elsewhere.

As part of the settlement, $1 million will be used to reimburse the agencies and $1 million will be used to fund homeland security and other programs. Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc., and Interference Inc. also will issue a public statement accepting full responsibility and apologizing for the incident.

"Last week's events caused a major disruption in the greater Boston area on many levels â?? crippling public transportation, causing serious traffic problems, negatively affecting local businesses and perhaps most significantly, costing Boston and surrounding communities thousands of dollars," Coakley said.

Turner released a statement again taking responsibility for the "unconventional marketing tactic" and apologizing for hardships caused to Boston area residents.

"We understand now that in today's post-Sept. 11 environment, it was reasonable and appropriate for citizens and law enforcement officials to take any perceived threat posed by our light boards very seriously and to respond as they did," the statement said.

The company said it was reviewing its policies concerning local marketing efforts and strategies to ensure that they are not disruptive or perceived as threatening.

Authorities say two men were paid to hang the signs around the city. Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, have pleaded not guilty to placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.

Coakley said prosecutors were in discussions with the men's attorneys to resolve the charges before a trial.
