Driver and accomodation in Phenom Phenn

FCC not a guest friendly atmosphere, most of the people hanging around there are the ones you detest the most:

"Ohh; look at that disgusting man victimizing that dissadvantaged girl!" ect.

I'd mention Flamingo's but it is generally full these days and anyway, I'll then be accused of shilling for Flamingos because I've mentioned it before and then a flame war will errupt so I won't reccommend Flamingo's.

Paris Hotel on Kampuchea Krom Blvd has decent rooms for $15, in-house massage fishbowl and a casino. Kampuchea Krom is a commercial district but only minutes away by moto from most of the local action.

If you book in advance,(paris_hotel@hotmail.com) they will pick you up at the airport but charge for it, I'm not sure how much.

Flamingo's will pick you up for free, but there I go again; pimping for Flamingo's.

I sometimes stay at the Anchor International on 148 a couple of blocks down from the riverfront. It is pretty funky, the rooms are OK for $10 & $15, higher floors cheaper but it's a walk-up.

It is half a block from the daily fresh-market and can be an interesting place to stay. It has a friendly and accommodating staff. They do get a fair number of backpackers as they send a Tuk-Tuk to meet the daily buses that come in from Viet Nam. Nobody cares who you bring to your room.

Where ever you stay in Phnom Penh, do not be casual about putting valuable items into hotel lock-boxes. Cameras, mobiles, laptops and passports do dissappear from rooms on a regular basis; one friend had his camera stolen at Flamingo's even though he'd put a bicycle chain on the wardrobe door: they simply unscrewed the hinges.

I never used a driver there but there is a list on the ISG Cambodia forum.

ANyone know a good/reliable driver in Phenom Phenn? And also a clean/safe/decent place to stay...guest friendly maybe? Was think of FCC, but not sure they are guest friendly...

i've never been to Phenom Phenn, though i lived many years in a town called Phnom Penh. is that where you're going? may i humbly suggest you learn a few basic about a destination, such as how to spell/pronounce the name of the capital? it really impresses the locals!

here's one useful factoid: phnom penh's the capital of a country named cambodia.

also, you want a moto with driver or a car? minibus?

you want to travel around town? make daytrips? tour the country?

what do you call a "decent" hotel? "le royal" is very decent and has an excellent bar though your rent-a-srei may well feel very out of place. or try the "hong kong" on monivong boulevard but i think it has changed names. or the "phnom penh" also on monivong, near the lake and calmette hospital; good rates when booked through a travel agent.

here's another useful factoid: the local language is called khmer.

I've stayed at the Bayon, Juliet, and the Good Luck. I prefer the Good Luck. Nice large, clean room, fridge, TV, newer and good central location. Hotel can get you a car/driver and there are several good, dependable moto types that work the hotel who are good and savvy. Has a pool also. No prob with guests, in fact, I've had the desk guy ask if I wanted some company on more than one occasion. (This is the former Hong Kong hotel and runs about 23-25 bucks/night.) (BTW, nothing especially wrong about the first two hotels, execept they cater more to the biz traveller and are 2-3x the price.

OH

Majority of decent hostess bars are on St 104. On same street is Pickled Parrot guesthouse. Aussie run. About $15 bucks a night or so. Plus it's open 24 hours.

Capital (or is it Capitol?) is up by Psar Orussey and is a dump. There are other better options on the same street as that guesthouse. Cleaner. But really you're better off near river. Down by river is handy for the likes of Sharky.

Street 51 is where Walkabout/Heart of Darkness/Shanghai etc are located. Heart is a real sweaty dump. Walkabout fine for a couple of brewskis. Shanghai has some pretty hostesses.

As for drivers there are quite a few who tout for business outside the tourist hot spots who can be quite informative and who will speak good English. A guy I met paid one driver $20 a day for him to be on call 24 hours. Got pretty good usage of him. If I can find his phone number will pm you.
