wonderlust
Nice. Is that using EDGE technology? It would certainly be useful if you could just take your mobile and laptop everywhere and not have to worry about wireless.
..
Mai roo. Must be, since 3G is not yet available. Just using the mo-by as a modem... Cheers, SD
Mekong
It must be EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution)at those speeds. If you are going to be using EDGE/GPRS/GSM as you primary internet connection it may be better to consider using an Air Card rather than your cell phone. DTAC and True Move have various packages available that would work out a lot cheaper.
wonderlust
What are the benefits of an AirCard? If you've got an EDGE mobile already wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just buy a USB cable and plug it in?
Mekong
Using EDGE via your Cell Phone you are charged by data transfer, Baht per Kb, with a data account charges are based on connection time. It depends on how much you utilise it whether it is worth the initial outlay and setting up an account, I find it advantageous in my line of work to be able to connect to my office server via EDGE and have unlimited data transfers for 650 Baht / 140 Hours / Month. If I was using my cell phone for the same data transfer it would be at least 6,500 Baht a month. If all you need is 20-30 minutes / day using your cell phone probably makes ecconomic sense, but 6-7 hours per day in remote locations I find the Air Card better. wonderlust
I thought you could get unlimited deals just with a normal mobile. I've looked at the websites of the Thai providers and they don't mention that you need an AirCard to get the unlimited deals. You need to put a simcard into the AirCard don't you or is it something completely different?
Mekong
It is a Sim Card, but primary an unlimited data account as opposed to a voice account, for me 20 Baht / day is a reasonable price to pay to stay connected for the hours I cannot find a Wifi connection. As I said before, it depends on how much one utilises the net, Forums, Chat rooms and porn are the social benefits of the Net compared to how I utilise it on a daily basis. wonderlust
Do you need an AirCard to get this unlimited data account? If it's a sim card I would have thought it makes no difference whether you stick it in an AirCard or a mobile phone.
Mekong
But if you are using your mobile 10 hours / day as a modem you are fucked for making / receiving phone calls. I much prefer a device that fits into my PCMCIA slot than tying up my Mobile.
Palatkik
Agree it makes things simpler to have a dedicated AirCard type system plugged into a PC to avoid tying up a mobile, however: 1. I thought you could still make voice calls on a mobile whilst GPRS data connection is running? I haven't tried it though. 2. Companies like DTAC offer unlimited monthly GPRS services per month from 999B last time I looked.
