mongatu
When I'm in Thailand, I like to use a mobile phone tethered to my laptop for internet access. It's been a while since I've been back there and I'm just wondering which mobile service provider (e.g., DTAC, AIS, etc.) provides the fastest (I know it's not truly fast), most reliable internet access in the Pattaya area, and also what the monthly rates are these days? Last time I was there, DTAC was more reliable but more expensive. Has anything changed in this regard? Thanks in advance for any comments/info. CTO
I just started doing this with a new Nokia 3110C - great cheap phone. WIth AIS depending on area I get from 100 - 400 kbps - and the speed is good. My friend uses the same phone with DTAC and not as good speed when we compare. mongatu
That sounds pretty decent. Last year I found DTAC to be superior in Pattaya, albeit a bit more expensive. Would you mind telling me where are you using AIS mostly and how much does it cost per month for at least 500 hrs or unlimited, if you know? CTO
300 baht for 100 hours - 500 baht for 300 hours and 900 baht unlimited They use two systems - one is better than other - in Hua Hin had great connections first day, crap the next
dddave
So many hotels are getting Wi-Fi now, it might not be necessary. Check with where you plan to stay.
WorldFun
400kbps??? are you sure 'coz that would mean HSDPA or better technology...
..
Ya, sure. I usually connect at 460k from my Nokia 6110 in Bangkok on AIS. Cheers, SD
mongatu
I'm trying to figure out if my current phone would work with AIS's 3g network. It has "UMTS 2100." But I'm not sure how that is different from HSDPA 2100.
Palatkik
Nearly all Asian networks use this (except Thailand!) ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Deployed_UMTS_networks#Asia My phone has UMTS 2100 also and afaik is absolutely freaking useless in Thailand.
