Sharia law SHOULD be used in Britain, says UK top judge

The most senior judge in England yesterday gave his blessing to the use of sharia law to resolve disputes among Muslims.

Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips said that Islamic legal principles could be employed to deal with family and marital arguments and to regulate finance.

He declared: 'Those entering into a contractual agreement can agree that the agreement shall be governed by a law other than English law.'

In his speech at an East London mosque, Lord Phillips signalled approval of sharia principles as long as punishments - and divorce rulings - complied with the law of the land.

But his remarks, which back the informal sharia courts operated by numerous mosques, provoked a barrage of criticism.

Lawyers warned that family and marital disputes settled by sharia could disadvantage women or the vulnerable.

Tories said that legal equality must be respected and that rulings incompatible with English law should never be enforceable.

Lord Phillips spoke five months after Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams suggested Islamic law could govern marital law, financial transactions and arbitration in disputes.

The Lord Chief Justice said yesterday of the Archbishop's views: 'It was not very radical to advocate embracing sharia law in the context of family disputes'.

He added there is 'widespread misunderstanding as to the nature of sharia law'.

...

How about using English law in Islamic counries???

Worse, the West is doomed, that's exactly why I left the place: as the French saying goes "après nous les mouches" for those who can understand what it means...

I had the pleasure to shop for a Kipling bag for the gf last May in Brussels's main shopping street, rue Neuve. I felt not at home in North Africa. :(

How and why? Expand on this comment please.

I think that it is a combination of things.

First, the class system. Britain was never a land of e pluribus unum but rather was always led from the top. Classism, the aristocracy and the monarchy are discredited but have not been replaced by anything. As a result what had been a healthy and charming middle class skepticism is now mere cynicism.

Also there is the problem of nationalism within the UK. The K is less and less U.

Then there is the EU. Europe as a whole is a business enterprise and an utterly corrupt and inefficient one at that. It is nothing that anyone will ever truly believe in. Watch the Ray Charles video and ask yourself, will anyone ever sing that way about anything emanating from Brussels? Not bloody likely!

Immigration is a problem and Muslim immigration is a cancer. Islamism is not the main disease, but it is the opportunistic infection that will likely kill the patient whose immune system has been compromised.

And what is the disease? Socialism, of course. Britons are increasingly looking to the collective to provide for them while at the same time they disrespect and act to undermine the collective more and more. This is fast-wind suicide.

Balanced against all of this are no hopeful signs whatsoever. Britain is doomed.

Tartempion I recently spent on day in Brussels

(my sister's wedding).

Went to show the "grand place" to Czech family members (only time when I "went out")

and.....within this timeframe I was told by

"nice people from Magreb":

- Go home you damn chink...

- "Chinetoque" which means "chink"

I felt really at home and was really tempted to retort violently.

Luckily for me there was another family member with us who is working for the BSR

Consequences:

- They were controlled by police officers

- One was arrested for carrying an illegal weapon

(big knife) and some drug (hashich)

No wonder why I feel more at home in Asia than in Belgium.

By the way, they were unemployed (we have a nice social security system) and their French was at best as good as my Dutch...

All in all, my home country is a great place thanks to some of these scumbags.

He declared: 'Those entering into a contractual agreement can agree that the agreement shall be governed by a law other than English law.'

This is the key phrase that is being overlooked, and the concept is not that unusual in contractual relationships. I have been involved in several contracts in Thailand where the laws of Singapore (as a neutral location) applied. All of our contracts in ME are done under either UK or US laws. If two parties located in the UK wants to use sharia law in a civil contract, such as a loan, what is the problem? :dunno:

Nowhere can I find where he suggesting that sharia law be applied in criminal cases Nor where it would apply if both parties were not willing.
