Poll: People not happy with new cabinet

 

(BangkokPost.com) - More than 60% of people questioned in a recent poll conducted by Bangkok University have no confidence in the new government under Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

 

Some 63.4% of respondents said they are not satisfied with the new cabinet, saying some people appointed as new ministers are not suitable for the posts while others have bad political records.

 

About 66.4% of those questioned in the poll said they do not have faith in Mr Somchai. Only 33.6% said they do.

 

When asked about their opinions on the future of Thailand under the new government, about 45.5% said the political situation would remain unchanged. About 22.3% said they believe political situation would improve. Only 15.4% said they think the situation would deteriorate.

Deputy PM Chavalit resigns

 

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh tenders his resignation on Tuesday to take responsibility on police's use of forces and tear gas on anti-government protesters.

 

Gen Chavalit is deputy prime minister in charge of security.

 

Police fired tear gas and used forces to disperse the protesters who blocked and surrounded the Parliament on Tuesday morning.

 

They wanted to block access of Members of Parliament to the Parliament to attend policy debate of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawats' government.

Attorney general files case to dissolve PPP

 

(BangkokPost.com) - Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) forwarded dissolution case against the ruling People Power party (PPP) to the Constitution Court Friday.

 

The move follows the disqualification of former PPP deputy leader Yongyuth Tiyapairat, convicted by the Supreme Court in early July of vote buying in the last general election.

 

PPP, meanwhile, said it would listen to the detail of the case before setting up a committee to fight it.

 

Prime Minister's Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkam and Prime Minister's secretary-general Chusak Sirinil will be part of the committee.

PM Somchai suddenly cancels oversea trips

 

PM's abrupt cancellation of his trips prompts speculation of House dissolution or PM resignation

 

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat abruptly cancelled all his trips to neighboring countries scheduled to start this Friday.

 

It is still unclear why he decided to revoke the plans which have been planned for weeks since he took office.

 

PM is scheduled to visit Laos and Cambodia from October 12 to 13, Burma on October 15 and Singapore on October 17.
