PM: No resignation or parliamentary dissolution

(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat went on national television at about 10pm Wednesday and insisted he will not step down, citing that his administration was democratically elected by the majority of Thai people.

After arriving from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in Peru, Mr Somchai said he had no plans to dissolve the parliament, as the committee for monitoring political developments, chaired by national army chief Anupong Paojinda, proposed on Wednesday afternoon.

The premier also demanded the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) demonstrators to leave Suvarnabhumi airport and Government House because foreigners, tourists and other parties suffered the consequences, not only the government. :alert:

He vowed that his government will continue giving its utmost performance and called on the protesters to help restore normalcy in the country.

The cabinet meeting on Thursday will discuss urgent measures to deal with the political crisis, the prime minister said.

He also reminded state officials to strictly follow and abide by the laws and regulations.

C-130 aircraft minister boarding makes emergency landing

A C-130 aircraft which is scheduled to bring some ministers to Chiang Mai to attend special cabinet meeting has to make emergency landing after having an engine problem. :alert:

The aircraft took off at a military air base in the Royal Air Force headquarter in Bangkok at about 10am.

However after flying for about about 30 minutes, it had to turn back and made an emergency landing at the air base because an engine broke down.

The report did not reveal names of the ministers boarding to the aircraft. The ministers then took another aircraft to go to Chiang Mai.

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat is scheduled to organise a special cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai to discuss about the ongoing political turmoil after anti-government protesters seized Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Returning from Peru, Somchai's aircraft landed at Chiang Mai airport to avoid the protesters.

Earlier reports said several Cabinet members failed to arrive in time to travel to Chiang Mai, sources said.

The sources said after the plane took off, several Cabinet members just arrived at the military airport.

The ministers were apparently stuck in heavy traffic congestion on the Phaholyothin Road.

Unsettled Army situation keeps PM in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat will remain in Chiang Mai for the time being as the army situation is "unsettled," Government deputy spokesperson Suparat Nakbunnam said Friday.

Prime Minister Somchai has no schedule yet to return to Bangkok, Suparat said, adding the decision to stay in Chiang Mai fro the time being is as part of security measures.

"It is mainly because the army situation is still unsettled. And from now on, PM's schedules will be confidential. Reporters will not be informed of his schedules," she said.

Somchai has chosen to stay in Chiang Mai after returning from Peru as anti-government protesters seized Don Muang and Suvarnbhumi airports. He declared state of emergency on both airports on Thursday from state-run NBT station in Chiang Mai.

In the programme, Somchai dismissed an increasing call from the situation monitoring panel under the Army for him to dissolve the House.

On Thursday, the situation in the capital was extremely tense as coup rumours spread after the premier shot down calls by the army to step down to solve the political turmoil.

The embattled premier will chair Friday a teleconference with governors and senior officials nationwide from Chiang Mai's City Hall.
