As an aside, it was interesting that sanctions were deployed against Austria previously, because of the extreme rights rise. The main problem with this is that it reinforces the message and hardens the resolve of this type of personality. They seek to be in groups, external opposition only provokes them to further consolidation.

what ya got to say about your germanic brothers over the border kamui?

That's an ugly story.

That's the result of several decades of incompetence and corrupted political parties. It's also a result of latent antisemitism and latent hate of immigrants.

After WWII Austria described itself as victim of the German fascism while suppressing that many (most?) Austrians happily followed Adolf Hitler who was Austrian. Because of this the horror of Faschism was never addressed and discussed properly and as a result the right wing ideology and hatred of foreigners was always existing under the surface.

When the traditional (corrupt and often incompetent) political parties who ruled Austria for decades started to loose their grip on the country in the 1990s, it just needed a few right wing populists to persuade many Austrians that they have a simple cure for all misery: elect the right wing parties, for their simple answers in a complex world: throw out the immigrants or if not possible to make their life miserable.

PS: A sign how Austria dealt with it's history was visible for decades in Austria's fantastic museums: Major artworks which were stolen by the Austrian National Socialists from Jewish families were exhibited at the museum for decades and those families and descendants were denied _any_ compensation for the losses. Why? Because all Austrian governments said, that since they were victims of the Nazis they could not have stolen them (and they suppressed all research on this topic at the same time). Only in the recent years international pressure became to high that Austria had to give back master pieces of art to the Jewish families. Austria would have never done it with out external pressure.
