For the US forces alcohol, beer "treatments" etc... are something a bit strange sometimes (especially for the squids aka the navy).

Many armies have a long tradition of providing alcoholic beverages to their men.

Brits and Germans especially and let's not speak about the alcohol consumption in the Russian army...

About Afghanistan:

German population has the same general approach as the Japanese population -> these days deeply pacifist although there is always the curiousity for all things military as these two cultures come from a "military - warrior one".

The general situation in Afghanistan and different views:

At first every country agreed to get rid of the Talebans, which IMO was a good thing.

Problem was: The US lead the mob and ran the show.

-> there was a big popular support in EU about that.

But when the US went to Iraq and lies appeared then support fadded fast -> gradually more and more pressure on governments for not sending troops to Iraq.

Unfortunately now Afghanistan = Iraq = US ruling the world = US mess -> let the US get 2 Vietnams

(Note: US militarily won the Vietnam war but lost the country)

Thanks to the US messing up its strategy (and realizing far too late that these 2 wars need

"hearts and minds" strategies).

As in both countries the US lead the show and never accepted to listen to allied suggestions

(especially the British ones as these fellows have a quite long experience of fighting insurgencies

-> Malaysia, Aden, Ireland etc...)

then they are the only ones to blame for strategic blunders.

The US has still the most powerful army in the world but will probably will never win in a "insurgency" war.

RY: Many Americans are opposed to the war so much that I think many of them voted for Obama.
