One area where we do have to thank the Americans, Indians and Africans - we didn't need to go to war with the British Empire to gain independence, courtesy of the struggle waged by earlier colonies. Of course, they still used our desert for nuclear weapons testing, and British Generals used their colonials as cannon fodder, but that was as much about early Australian governments lacking the balls to do anything other than bow and scrape when the Old Country called on them.
