Flashermac
All right, what have I done ... or has it been done to me? The past couple of days XP hangs up on loading - just stops with the black screen and the Windows logo. If I threaten it enough, I have get into the safe mode. Then I have to go back to an earlier save to get it going. Next time I boot up, same procedure. AVG shows no virus. Once it is running, XP works fine. But now I notice Firefox won't open for me. Have I got a virus, or is my PC just tired from overwork?
expat
Have you added any new hardware lately, installed any new software, or made any other changes or did this start happening out of the blue?
shygye
Windows never liked you. It doesn't like anyone. This would tend to indicate a hard drive going bad. Can you boot from a CD or USB okay?
cavanami
Once you get into Windows, modify the C:\boot.ini, so as to add the " /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /sos" string (no quotes) at the end as shown as what I have in my boot.ini file. This will display the files Windows in loading and may help you see if it is "stuck" somewhere. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /sos
Flashermac
Thanks all. Only things I've downloaded were updates to the AVG virus scan and Opera. p.s. I was so much happier with Windows 95. Why couldn't they have left things alone.
drogon
make a save on another HD first then start investigating. Maybe also download Malwarebyte -> this is a freeware and scan your HD. I agree that is is probably your HD which is going to die...

drogon
Yeah microsoft had to patch an IE vulnerability... Firefox was a fix too. Although none of the two seems related to FS problem otherwise even the safe mode wouldn't work. Either the HD dying or a virus...
