I am planning for a trip to Thailand around April 2009 along with my family. I have shortlisted 4 destinations in Thailand- BAngkok,Phuket,Pattaya and Koh Samui and we plan to visit one of the places. Pls guide what is the good time in the year to visit these places? and Which of these four places would be great for a family holiday?

Thanks in advance.

P.S sorry if wrong box.

Hello Femaleduck,

I would go for either Ko Samui myself out of those four. You should consider Hua Hin or Krabi as well.

That is if you are coming for a beach holiday. Or have a tour from Hua Hin, through Ko Turatao or Phangan to Ko Samui don't forget Chumphon along the way. And then from Samui to Krabi.

Phuket is expensive overpriced and overrated imho. Pattaya .... well let's say it has issues. And you will likely come through Bangkok anyway. Stay 3 days in BKK at the end of your holiday to shop and visit the grand palace.

april can already be pretty hot! so better you come in march!

forget pattaya for families!

i would combine Bangkok for 3 days of sightseeing and shopping with some beach destination like Ko Samui or Phuket! on those two island you have to carefully choose your resort depending whether you prefer a very quiet place or a bit more restaurants and nightlife in the area.

I'm surprised that you've been able to shortlist four places in Thailand, which you've presumably done on the internet, but you haven't been able to form any opinion as to their suitability as a family holiday destination?

Depends on the age of the kids involved - if very young - I'd go Hua Hin - more relaxing than Phket - if kids are older and looking for more to do - maybe Phuket - I wouldn't take kids to Koh Samui - maybe just me but to rough with older teens and traffic will be buzy.

For me, Samui has lost all of it's charm. They may as well escort you off the plane, shake all the money off of you, and put you back on. That is how welcome you are made to feel.

My two favorite spots are Hua Hin and Khao Lak, which is north of Phuket. Both are very family friendly.
