At least Goldman has a positive view on sterling.

They must've read my post 55555

I agree, the pound is the money maker for the speculators at the moment...this is no worse than previous total fuckups...of which the UK has had more than its fair share!

I'm long the Pound, or I would be if I really knew what that meant

If you think that is depressing Try This not seen a penny for nearly 4 months now.

It sounds from what I have read that you will get something back, whether that is 100%, 75% or 50% I don't know.

What I can't understand is that they are still trading, sometimes as "New Kaupthing Bank". It appears that they can only take Iceland residents, but they will take others as customers if you enter into some kind of custody arrangement. Like anybody would?

The bastards should be made to put all their cash reserves into paying off the deposits of their customers before they are allowed to start thinking of rebuilding their business.

Anyway, hang in there and I really hope you get it all back.

Teddy,

I wont bore you with the full details but the collapse of the bank has a lot of strange facts behind it.

Two of the Manx directors are also on the board of the Manx FSC (Financial Secureties Commision) why did they allow GBP 581 Million to be Transfered to Kaupthinh UK on 7th October 2008.

On 8th October Brown / Darling used Anti-Terrorist Laws to seize the assets of Kaupthing IoM held in UK accounts.

The court orders for the seizure are still sealed papers, the UK goverment is refusing to allow it to be made public.

And thats just the tip of the Iceberg, next court case is on 29th January, I will wait and see what bullshit we get fed then.

Faustian,

My attitude / arrogance is based on the belief that if you want something strong enough and are prepared to fight for it you will get it. I was relatively young (24) when I first came to Asia for work back in 1988 and I made the decision then to make the region my home, been based here ever since. There have been difficult times as well as good, times when I thought it may be easier to return to the UK than try and hang on here but that would have been admitting defeat. Its ironic but my home town footbal club, or as my wife says my religion, also have the same attitude it must be something to do with the water in Salford.

I was chatting with DS earlier this week, next Friday 30th he is pencilled in to show up, I am still working on him financing a Sunday Brunch at the Marriot Resort.

What's really wrong with Sterling?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/4318572/Whats-really-wrong-with-Sterling.html

This article and the ones from preceding posts, say that the silver lining in Sterling's plunge, is that British exports will become cheaper and so lead to a recovery in the Pound. But none of the articles say what these exports are. Does anybody know what The UK. exports enough of that would cause a Pound recovery?

Some specialised equipment in the manufacturing sector, prestige cars like the Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin. The car industry is the big beast BUT it is affected adversly by a recession so I really wouldn't pin my hopes on it being enough to save the day.

The oil industry exports the black stuff but that is cheap as chips at the moment.

basically the UK is what I term a 'Weak Link' in times of recession due to the vulnerability from lack of demand.

The Exports we tend to go for are 'nice to haves' in times of boom. Not necessarily bust times though :(
