I've been considering opening a decent coffe shop (with e.g. great italian style coffee), but given that I estimate some 90% or more of total consumption in mid-up market coffe shops are sold as 'iced/sweetened/blended' I'd say the niche market for authentic great coffees are tricky to go after at best...

So I go with the flow i.e. drink the sickly sweetened/milky/iced coffees as well & luckily that way the 'good' & 'bad' coffee are really hard tp distingish LOL.

Still I have my favorites.

Amazon's iceblended for example. Marvelous on a hot slow morning.

Wawees's 'ice boom's are not bad either albeit on the pricey side.

Then there's all the millions's of 'independent' or small 'chain' shops/carts where a nice/excellent local or expresso or iced coffee can be had for 20bt or less be it served in glass, cup, cardboard or plastic bag!

cheers

Last time I was in LOS, the decent places for coffee all seemed to be fairly busy most of the time. I went to a little place done up similar to Starbucks (similar logos etc but slightly different spelling. Colouring on the sign was blue), in a little shopping strip somewhere near soi 2 or zero(?).. From what I remember Starbucks itself was doing a roaring trade as well (next to a bookshop i think) somewhere near Gullivers.

I think a nice place selling genuinely good coffee at a fair price would do well in Suk or tourist area for sure.

ban rie coffee right on the corner of ekamai and sukh has fine, strong thai coffee...

I keep meaning to stop in there, it was supposedly founded as a Thai competitor to Starbucks ( TIME article )

Their objectives, in fluent Thaiglish, are:

1. To create Thai coffee from the north of Thailand, Sheang Rai province “Thai Doi Nhau Va Vi Ban Doi Sharng Kao Ed Ead Bork†become the high standard of coffee in the world.

2. To be a navigate project in order to develop Thai coffee from the south of Thailand at Ban Saranlom, Tungkar, Shum Porn province “Thai Pag Tai Bork†become to the highest standard of the world of coffee.

3. To be a navigate project in order to develop green tea from the northeast of Thailand at Ban Yangpattana, Ban Yang, Lamplaimard, Burirum province “Sha Keaw Bai Mon Bork†become the highest standard.

4. To increase the selling price of coffee and green tea twice as much to be a gift for the framers.

So, pretty much promoting home grown coffee and tea.

The coffee shop in entrance to fortune is good - for coffee as well as other reasons - 92 degrees is a good cheap coffee authentic - in Aree the large coffee shop in sub soi 1 is very good wa wa I thin it's called. Many place in Bangkok now have very good coffee - FAR better than the slops made by starbucks.

Best lao Coffee is Mountain brand. The trouble is the other brands often sit on the shelf for months, but th guy who runs the Mountain brand refreshes the stock in the shops he serves every few weeks.

This in itself makes a big difference, coffee beans once they are roasted need to be ground and consumed within a month or they're no good, the roasted beans once ground are only good for 24 hours.

best case is consumption between 4 and 24 hour after roasting.
