drogon
Why countries don't follow the "gunboat politic" or the same tactics as Caesar or Pompey when dealing with pirates??? (Basically, raid and destroy their havens with overwhelming force)
cavanami
US have sent in the Marines many years ago, thus the song..."...from the shores of Tripoli..."

Flashermac
If I remember right, there were 9 US Marines on the shores of Tripoli, commanded by 1st Lt Presley O'Bannon. However, they were the best of the 500 man mercenary army the US put into the field that took part in the successful attack on Derna. But that was in the Mediteranean, not the Indian Ocean. drogon
-> no need to send ground troops in Somalia...a bomb or a missile on their known havens... Or just blow out of the water any small ship in the area....as anyway the few "fishermen" turn into pirates (joking here)
cavanami
That area is actually loaded with hundreds of fishing boats, so not easy to tell the fisherpeople from the bad guys.
drogon
Yep, one of the reason why it is sometimes difficult for the attacked ships as well as the warships to spot the threats. -> but as most of the fishermen found piracy a more lucrative activity.... Well the "phishing" boats towing a speedboat might earn a second look. Plus the boats with too large a crew.
Flashermac
And if they are carrying AK-47s and RPG launchers instead of fishing nets, it might make you suspicious.
