Flashermac
Bangkok Post 11 Apr 2009 TURMOIL IN PATTAYA Summit postponed following clash The postponement of the ASEAN Summit meeting has been announced live on TV by government spokesman Panithan Watanayagorn. "The government is investigating the incident," Panithan told an urgent press conference following the clash. He said he expected related meetings would be postponed accordingly. "We are concerned with the safety of the ASEAN leaders and the people, including the protesters. We are working hard to control the situation," Panithan said. The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Tharit Charungvat, said foreign delegates are not the targets of the protesters. "The protesters want to humiliate the government." At 8:40 am, Red Shirt protesters armed with giant firecrackers, Molotov cocktails, sling shots and batons, battled with local resident who formed a line to protect the venue of Asean +6 and Asean + 3 summits. Several people were injured. The outnumbered blue-shirted locals scattered and ran for cover when the Red Shirts attacked them. Sounds of firecrackers were heard and Red Shirt people were seen firing bolts from slingshots at the Blue Shirts, who had tried formed a line in front of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel. The Red Shirts then formed a line and advanced until the two sides stood less than one metre apart. The clash broke out. Red Shirts were seen carrying Molotov cocktails, but none had been thrown at the other side yet. Terrified local residents closed their homes and many were seen weeping with fear. On Friday, the Red Shirt leaders in Bangkok recruited followers to be deployed to Pattaya to fight against the Blue Shirts. Last night about 10,000 Red Shirts arrived at Pattaya in over 500 taxis, 20 buses, six-wheel trucks, motorcycles and private cars. They reached Phet Trakul Road, where a group of Red Shirts were demonstrating, at about 11:50 pm. At 7 am, about 100 Red Shirts and 30 taxis blocked the exit of Dusit Thani Pattaya Hotel to try to prevent the Chinese prime minister, Japanese prime minister and South Korean president from leaving for the summit talks with Asean leaders. samak
"to prevent the Chinese prime minister, Japanese prime minister and South Korean president from leaving for the summit talks with Asean leaders" i thought there were just a couple of ministers there (foreign and economy ministers) but not the countries' leaders? this is a shame for Thailand that they can't organize such a event without interruptions from some crazy demonstrators! cavanami
...the local residents have to take action??? they don't have police or military in that part of LOS???
radioman
I know I can be cynical at times but letting it go a little of the scale might just garner a lot of global support for a stronger course of action. I would imagine most of those countries represented at this event would be okay if the gov decides as a result to wield the big stick a little. waerth
Reds have occupied the convention center through a backentrance. All delegates were running away live on tv. This is a huge disaster for Thailand. W
