Bodies in containers

I think this could get very interesting. Highly plausible that in 1992 they loaded the bodies into a bunch of containers (even then there were hundreds of thousands of them on the Eastern Seaboard) and dumped them off the coast of Satahip, coincidently the location of the main Thai Navy port.

I think you may be right that some people may be quietly leaving the country soon.

Do you have an subsea experience?

Nope

Any idea what a container full of water weighs? Especially one that has been submerged in the mud for 20 years?

Alot?

They can't just hook some ropes and pull them up by hand. This would be a major salvage operation. Crane barges that size and saturation divers are not just sitting around the Gulf of Thailand, they are all working and you have to book them months in advance.

I would think that if it were thought that it/they (however many there are) had bodies in it, there might be some priority in getting whatever equipment is needed. Could just be me being dumb again.

Every night on the news they show some video of a diver with basically a hammer and chisel tapping away. Can't believe if this is such a high priority that after this length of time, they wouldn't have done more than that. Again.....TIT.

Assume these are 20 foot containers, full of water they would weigh some 40 tons, add the capacity you would need to pull out of the mud, you probably need at least 100 ton barge crane. As this is offshore, it will need to be a barge with at least 4 point anchoring system, as well as provisions for saturation divers (one reason there has not been much work done to date is it has all been done by scuba, which probably means they can only work for 30-40 minutes at a time), and you would need an anchor handling vessel. In todayâ??s market you are talking about well over 100k a day for spread like this and on short notice you could be paying 300k or more.

So, this could a several million dollar effort to bring these containers up. It might be done some day, but they will have to figure out how to pay for it first. Maybe PTT will donate a spread they already have under contract to do it. After, their profit just dropped 72% in the 1Q09 and Iâ??m sure they would be happy to spend a few million on this.

My point was you are so quick to say â??Or is this another case of TIT?â? without any knowledge of the situation.

Camera to be used in search for remains

A cargo container located in the sea off Juang island in Chon Buri's Sattahip district could be drilled to see if human skeletons lie inside.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday approved the drilling operation.

A small camera would be inserted through the hole to view the interior of the container.

However, Mr Abhisit said an estimate of the cost involved should be made first to avoid burdening state coffers.

Drilling the container was a cheaper option than salvaging it from the seabed.

Mr Abhisit said investigators were working on a theory about the human skeletons, but nothing was known for sure.

On Friday, a joint undersea survey by the Navy and the Justice Ministry's Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) started after claims that three to five containers stuffed with human skeletons had been found under the sea off Samaesarn.

Earlier, scuba divers claimed to have come across a large number of skulls on the seabed during a coral reef adventure dive, and reported the find to the media.

The reports have renewed hopes of relatives of those who went missing during the 1992 Black May uprising that the skeletons may belong to them.

They have been seeking the remains of their loved ones for 17 years and suggested the skeletons could be those of their missing kin.

Dr Porntip Rojanasunan, director of the CIFS, said the 3m x 6m cargo container was discovered about seven metres under the sea and about 16 kilometres off the coast.

It was also covered in coral growth aged more than 20 years.

She said salvaging the container was an option, but would hurt the marine environment,

A private company had offered to loan her advanced camera technology, which allows a tiny application to produce images inside the container through a drill hole.

Khunying Porntip said she was talking to the company but could not tell when a second undersea survey would be carried out.

She will report her findings to the government today.

PM says container not related to May 1992 bloodshed

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday that a mysterious shipping container on the Chon Buri seabed should have nothing to do with the May 1992 bloodshed.

Speaking during his weekly TV programme, Abhisit said an initial test found that the container appeared to be 20 years old, while the Black May bloodshed happened 17 years ago.

Rumours had it the containers contained bodies of those killed when soldiers opened fire on pro-democracy protesters in May 1992.

To follow on with this theme: Abhisit has just lost any respect I may have had for him or the journalist who reported his words. Does he seriously suggest that if you're going to dump containers in the sea, bodies or no, that they have to be brand new ones?

Where is it written that containers "for the dumping of/sea/ocean/other large bodies of water" must be brand new?

If the dumpers think this, then they obviously haven't read the section on "age of containers... for the dumping of/sea/ocean/other large bodies of water ... may be up to and including 15 years"

This really is Thailand.

Cheers
