In the absence of contradicting material, I'd say the letter by the Acting U.S. Attorney in Sacramento pretty-well explains the basis for this guy's dismissal. As for senility (the Politico link), it's possible. 77 years old? Way past his retirement age. (Same same a few elected officials.) Clearly you can't have a bureaucrat jumping into and fucking up a potential criminal investigation. And going to the press before an issue is resolved should never be condoned.
