It’s was my experience in the 5 years or so I was involved in it (and thank God I am no longer in it) that the majority of programmers are crap world wide. It takes an exceptional person to be a good programmer and it is never based on nationality.

Thai schools do not teach critical thinking skills. They certainly do not teach exceptional skills.Students remain ignorant of the skills required to reason.

The ignorance shown is not based on race, it is simply that the majority of students in these Thai rote learning institutions are, well...Thai! Guess that makes it APPEAR race/nationality-based.

Never had to work with Thai programmers. Have worked with a lot of Chinese, Indian, Singaporeans, Brits (including one Irish guy), many Americans, Canadians, a South African and a Brazilian [nut]. The majority were crap and had a lot of trouble understanding concepts, complex structures, and solving problems. They knew how to do a few things they had always done but when asked to get out of that box, they really struggled. But, there were some from each group that were great. I always put that down to their individual intelligence and personalities. Never occurred to me to blame thier schools for what I always perceived as basically a lack of intelligence. If you all are telling me that Thais are exceptionally deficient, based on your vast experience with a lot of other people of the same age group and different nationalities, I am willing to concede the point for programmers.

My comments ...

... are not limited to programmers.

... do not need comparison to others. They are specifically and intrinsically directed at Thais.

... have no need for your concessions.

That said, the approach to learning and to problem solving to which children are exposed is affected both by specific teachers and by national policies. Thailand is woefully inadequate in both respects. Given the right environment, Thais can no doubt achieve the same rate of success as other peoples with similar, below average IQs.

Hi,

I'm with KK on this one. I too don't think the problem is lack of intelligence, but more lack of being thought how to think. The majority of programmers I have dealt with here require a very strict set of instructions. Giving them a spec and asking them to write it and come to you with any questions (as I was used to in the West) will not work. Instead you will have to give them the spec as well as a much more detailed breakdown on what is required.

As I said, there are good ones and several of them are willing to learn and improve themselves. From my experience though they are severely in the minority.

At a rough guess I'd say I've dealt with maybe 100 Thai programmers. 1 of those I would consider a decent programmer.

Sometimes you can spot the in-aptitude quickly, other times it is more difficult (and likely more so for non-programmers).

And as for there being crap programmers in every country, no doubt about it :)

I do have my doubts about how accurately a non-programmer is able to tell though. Just because the guy tells you something can't be done, doesn't mean he is a crap programmer. He may very well be telling you the truth. Of course, from past experience I know that customers hardly ever accept the word of the IT guy unlike the word of their doctor, constructor or mechanic. It seems that everyone is an IT expert who 'knows' that it is 'easy'. (Sorry, pet peeve of mine, encountered too many customers who tell me think they know better even though they've never written a line of code and I've been doing so for 25 years)

Sanuk!

Interesting commentary on programmers.

My original point was this: I see trying to sell Thailand by claiming it has an advanced and open IT infrastructure as, well, fundamentally daft. TH says its not so bad. That may be true, but that is damning with faint praise, particularly when the point of the adverts - irrespective of the specifics - is the wonderful and open IT infrastructure that awaits you in Thailand.

If I was trying to promote investment on Thailand, I think I would start somewhere else. Attractive scenery or something like that... :content:

I disagree; from the perspective of a company looking to setup in Thailand the IT infrastructure is advanced and open. We run a main office with about 200 people and 5 site offices of about 20 people each all connected to the company’s WAN. We have very good connectivity, running our e-mail (from central servers in Singapore) as well as our Oracle based document system. I can access data stored on severs all over the world with no problems.

What more does a company need? Unrestricted access to porn web sites? Access to website slandering the King and the country in general? (We actually have that as we connect to the internet outside Thailand). I don’t think so. If you can think of a problem with Thailand’s infrastructure that might impact a company, would like to hear it.
